VOL. 49 ISSUE 29 JULY 24, 2012 P75 S Briefly... Kacy Martinez took the Wom- en's Pro-class win. She's been tearing it up lately, chipping away at Tatum Sik's lead in the class championship. This was her third win in the last four races and now she's just seven points behind Sik, who finished second on the day, with two races left. And Ni- cole Madsen, third at Pala, isn't far behind, either. She trails Mar- tinez by just five points. Robby Bell gave Robert a real battle for the win on Sunday. He ended up going 2-2 for second overall. was right behind me most of the race. He made a pass on me around halfway through the race, so I tried getting him back right away when he bobbled a little go- ing into a turn, but I ended up run- ning into his rear tire and fell over." Robert, however, caught right back up to the leader. "After I went down he pulled a little gap on me," Robert said. "But I was able to reel him back in and we kept battling back and forth for a couple laps before he fell over and I got back around him." At that point, Robert found him- self with some breathing room, which he maintained to the finish, crossing the finish line well over a minute ahead of Bell. "[That] was an epic race," Bell said after Sunday's slugfest with Robert. "The first 40 minutes, I was just hanging behind Taylor and he was flying. I felt him make a push, so I picked it up a little bit and got right behind him. We had a pretty sweet little dice right be- fore the rocks and that's where I made the pass. I was feeling pret- ty good after the pass. The next few laps we had a sweet battle for the lead, going back and forth. Even though he got back around This was the first time the WORCS Series visited the Pala facility. Pala Raceway is known for its world-class motocross track, but it also hosts separate veteran and beginner tracks, which were both open to the public throughout the weekend. The off-road section of the course consisted of rocky, single-track trails that wound through the nearby hills, but the majority of the WORCS course incorporated much of the same motocross track used for the AMA Pro Motocross Champion- ship last year. For the first time, the Pro 2 class gated with the Pro 1 class. Pro 2 winner Justin Jones, on a 250F, surprised everyone by grabbing the holeshot. "I came out of the turn and nobody was in front of me," said Jones. "I wasn't sure what to do, so I kept racing and tried not to block any blue plates [Pro 1-class racers] that got near me. Then Taylor Robert went by me and I was actually relieved to not be leading the whole event." "Retired" five-time AMA Hare & Hound champ Destry Abbott continued on next page
