with a record lap time of a nat 1:27:00. He took the checkered flag with a seven-second lead ahead of his teammate, second-place fin· isher John Hopkins, whose best lap time of the day was 1:27:20. Mauro Cereda followed the two over the start/finish line to take third just four bike lengths ahead of Shane Prieto. Race promoter Henry DeGouw also reported a record number of race entries that weekend, with more than 750 registered entries. At the start of the Shootout, the sun had begun to set, blinding the riders as they headed westbound around the course. Also, Florida's high humidity level was increased by a brief rain earlier, and the combination of the sun and the moisture in the air produced a hazardous ha'ze. After a tense waiting period on the grid, the race was started. The Team Valvoline EMGO Suzuki riders started the race gridded on the fifth row. Rick Narup nabbed an early lead, with Manny Manusuthakis closing in. Lopez qUickly worked his way up to fifth place, and Hopkins was buried in traffic. Lopez took over first on the back straight. When Lopez hit the front straight. Hopkins was right behind him. The two had about a 15·bike-length lead over second·placed assume the lead, with Monsrud in third. By this time, Baylor had' established a healthy lead over the second-placed 250cc B rider, Nate Phillips. Bowman came from nowhere to challenge Nate for his position. Phillips put up a heck of a fight, but Bowman was on the move and made his pass. Somewhere in the forest, McLevy had some kind of wreck. Judging from the aftermath, it looked as though McLevy's KTM had been left lying in the middle of the road and had been run over by a semi. Luckily, McLevy was still in one piece. Stuckey, unaware of the mishap, continued to push his KX250 to the limit, fully expecting to see McLevy. Only on the fjfth and final lap did Stuckey become aware of his nemesis' misfortune. "I came around a corner and saw Josh's bike leaning against a tree," Stuckey recounted. "I wasn't sure what happened, but I realized I could back off the throttle at that point." Stuckey maintained his speed all the way to the finish line for the overall. He was followed by Gravitt in second and Masencup in third. In a short while, the Senior A class came across the line with Moore in first and Hughes in second, followed by Monsrud in third. In the 250cc B race, Baylor took the checkered, with Bowman second and Nate Phillips third. eN EX (IT UGIfTS; 1. Richie Moms (Due); 2. Justin OlIrvin (Sw); 3. Sarona Speedway Pollock pounds Barona Short Track By FRED WINDOM RAMONA, CA, JAN. 22 Barona Speedway opened the 2000 season with a new track and new riders, with San Diego's Outlaw Dirt Tracker Club hosting the first round of its Winter Millennium Series. Gone was the "fishbowl" banking, replaced by a flatter, more traditional oval, with a new clay track surface. The track maintenance crew got a little too enthusiastic with the water in the morning, but with some patience and wheel-packing, the track was ready for racing. Light turnout let classes in the IT run together in a two-row start. Mark Prescott led Pat Dwyer and Wayne Warrington in the Sportsman class through the right-hand hairpin. Novice riders Tim McDvetz, Ron Bartels, Gabe Slatton and Chris Downen followed. ATK·mounted Prescott began to pull away from Dwyer and Warrington, and he was never Durtlammwn Plantation Union Paint, &eorgia Results: Dec. 19, 1999 (Round 9) O/A: Rod Stuckey. AA: 1. Cereda followed suit and moved his way up to third by the end of the second lap. Hopkins was still running about 10 bike lengths behind Lopez. though he now had about a 25·bike-length lead over third·placed Cereda. At halfway, Lopez had a five·second lead over his teammate. Cereda chased behind in third, followed by Prieto and Manusuthakis. Lopez continued to put distance between himself and Hopkins. With one lap to go, he was now 6 1{2 seconds ahead of Hopkins. who had a three·second lead over Cereda. Eric Wood had pulled up to fifth place, behind Prieto, and with one lap to go there began a battle for third. Cereda accelerated out of the corners hard, but Prieto ran hard on the brakes into the turns and quickly closed the gap on him. Lopez claimed victory, crossing the line on one wheel. Hopkins finished about seven seconds behind in second place. Cereda took third, about four bike lengths ahead of Prieto, and Wood finished fifth. Earlier, Lopez won the GTO, ahead of Hopkins. Mike Ciccotto finished close behind in third, ahead of Manusuthakis and Cereda. Lopez also won the Heavyweight Superbike event, taking the lead from Cereda at the end of the first lap and staying out front for the rest of the race. Cereda maintained second, ahead of the battle behind him between Quenni King and Joseph Fletcher. King held off Fletcher to finish third. Monsrud; 4. D. Keith; 5. W. Bradshaw. S/SR A: 1. P. Golden. Warrington stayed on Dwyer's tail, coming alongside in turns three and four, but the XR was no match for Dwyer's CR500 down the front straight. The pair battled to the checkered flag. Novices had a good race going back in the pack, with McDveu leading the pack on a Kawasaki before trading paint with Bartels' IT500. Slatton and Downen trailed the pair, watching as Bartels stole the lead from McDvetz through the infield right·hander. Prescott took the overall win ahead of Dwyer and Warrington, with Bartels hanging on to fourth and first Novice, ahead of McDvetz, Slatton and Downen. The Open Amateurs and Novices started together, with Elliott Iverson and Rob Reed running out in 'front of the Amateur class on a pair of Wood-Rotax machines. Frank Norton was third on a Suzuki TLJ 000 Supertracker. Dave Adams, in what will probably be his last Novice race, led the McDveU-Bartels battle. Adams slipped past Reed for second overall and first Novice, while Bartels muscled past McDvetz for second Novice. Iverson took the overall win. Adams and Reed followed, with Bartels, McDveu and Josh Miller in tow. Rick Reed grabbed the lead in the Open Expert class on his Wood-Rotax to lead YZ400-mounted Richard Pollock and Husq· varna rider Frank Aragaki. Reed held on to the lead for a lap and a half. Then Pollock took a high line through three and four to take over. leaving Reed to hold off Aragaki as his 600 fought for traction on the now dry, blue and rippled track. Pollock built a lead as Ara· gaki started working Inside of Reed to chal· lenge for second. With two laps to go, Araga·
