Cummins gets it at
.
REM Glen Helen Motocross
By Rocky Hash
SAN BERNARDINO. CA. JAN. 30
Robert Cummins used the time-proven formula
of good starts and consistent riding to take home
the overall victory in the always-intense 2:;Occ
Beginner class during Racing Enterprises Motorsports' weekly Saturday Glen Helen Motocross.
When things got under way in the first moto.
it was the Kawasaki of Nathan Roberts out front
with the holeshol. Next came Cummins in second. while Gary Meloney held down third.
Honda rider Levi Brand positioned hirnseJI in
fourth. and Mike Meloney was fifth as the pack
came through the scoring section on lap one.
Cummins was wasting no time, as he dispatched Roberts on the second lap and took over
the lead. Brand was also moving up, as he
passed Gary Meloney to take over third and was
soon in Roberts' shadow. Cummins stayed clear
of the skirmish behind him. as he opened up a
three-second lead. Brand and Roberts went at it
furiously for three laps. and though Brand made
many attempts' to pass, he could make none
stick.
Another ri\cer on the move was Greg Meloney. who pushed his CR250 all the way up to
fourth by the halfway mark and was looking for
a way around Brand for the third spot.
When the white flag came out, it was Cummins sailing out front with a five-second lead.
Roberts had ·settled comfortably in second. while
Greg Meloney was applying pressure to Brand
for the third spot. At the checkers. it was Cummins taking the moto win and Roberts riding in
for second. Greg Melon.ey was able to make a
last-iap pass for the third spot in the back section of the course, and he took the position away
from Brand.
Cummins grabbed the holeshot in moto two
as Roberts settled for the second spot. Mike Meloney again gated well. and he held down third.
Greg Meloney was fourth and Brand fifth at the
end of lap one.
Cummins took advantage of the clear track
in front of him and he opened up a three-second
lead over the first three laps. Roberts appeared
to take the first half of the moto to get sorted
out. but just after the halfway mark he began to
cut into Cummins' lead.
Meanwhile. Greg Meloney had managed to
put the pass on his brother Mike to take over the
third position. As the moto wore on, Roberts
was able to move up slightly on Cummins. but
the Honda pilot held steady with the lead. When
the checkered flag came out, it was Cummins
taking the moto win to complete his perfect day.
Roberts was again second. while Greg Meloney
rode in for third.
