Both riders then rode masterfulJy, road racer Canet backing it into corners on the brakes to tretch out his lead on the asphalt, motocrosser Sun making up the deficit with good drives up the hill in the dirt. On the final lap, Sun got a wheel on Canet over the ski jump, but Canet retook the lead a the pair returned to the asphalt and held the lead to the checkered flag. "Now, that was fun!" beamed Canet afterward. "This was my first ride on a competitive Open bike in a year. I've been riding a Yamaha WR400 in the Premier class and getting smoked on the straights. Eddie Lawson couldn't be here this weekend, but I'd like to thank him for loaning me his Husky." The race for third was no less exdting, as Husqvarna-mounted Antonio Nunez edged MuZ Mastiff-mounted Mark Cernicky for the final podium spot. Jerry Evans picked up hi Honda CRSOO from a first-turn get-off to finish a fine fifth in the l8-rider field. Another good battle took place in the Super TT Middleweight main, with Honda CR250-mounted Cern icky grabbing the early lead, hotly pur ued by Canet, Sands and dirt tracker Don Howard. Sands was the first to exit the kirmish as he survived a lurid fron t-end slide entering the chicane and was forced to retire due to a flat tire on his Yamaha YZ250. Cernicky led for four lap but lipped back to third after experiencing a few frightening front-end slides of his own. Canet and Howard carried the fight to the finish, with Howard putting his Suzuki RM250 into the lead over the jump and holding the top pot to the stripe. Canet finished a close second, with Cernicky third. The Sportsman class (for bikes with stock 21-inch front wheels) was run concurrently, and Honda CR250-mounted Kay Vetter took the win after passing KTM 620-mounted Carl Blake on the final lap.
