Hull sails at Arena-Clash ST PURCELL, oi<, JAN. 22-23 The McClain County Expo building heated up as the fourth and fifth rounds of the 12-round Mountain Dew Arena-Clash Indoor Points Series developed into two exciting nights of fuJJblown ind or short track at its best. A special Arena-Clash race format was developed for the two-day show, with Friday night's first three finishers in each heat transferring to the first three spots on the front line for Saturday's race. All others had to transfer via a heat race or a semi held on Saturday. The action started early in the Pee Wee division, as Ryan Rector was planning to make it (our wins in a row in the series. He did just that on Friday night, defeating aU other Pee Wee contenders for his fourth victory in as many races. The win gave him a pole position for Sat· urday night's event, which he won as well. Bret Sowders had a three-point lead going into the weekend's 80cc race, and after two nights of racing he was still the leader, with a nine-point spread. Jerry Post continued his winning streak in the Open Amateur class, winning on both Friday and Saturday nights. Casey Carpenter took the win in the Mad Dog Mini l5Occ/Four-Stroke class on Friday, but he develo~ a problem on Saturday night, and Jerry Post again prevailed. Vintage Open bikes thundered into the McClain County Arena, and Tim Newby won on Friday night, but even with his pole position locked for Saturday, he could not hold off Earl Smith during the main. The race of the weekend came on Saturday night, when 10 main-event qualifiers came to the line. On the pole - having won Friday nighrs main event - sat Brian Isbell; next to him were A.J. Eslick and Mike Hinds. Clayton HuJJ was another hot contenaer who did not make the pole, ~ut he proved to be a threat in the main. The green £lag dropped, and after a tangle in turn one, Brandon Cartwright quickly moved up through the IO-rider field. After five laps, Cartwright had worked his way up to the fourth position; the leaders were now Isbell, Hinds, HuU and Cartwright The race was developing into an awesome main event, with eight laps left. On lap eight, Cartwright got past Hinds; then HuU passed Isbell on lap nine to take ti,e lead. Clayton passed Isbell on the outside in tum four in a "Kenny Roberts" riding style tllat got the crowd on their feet. On the final lap, with no time left, Cartwright puUed out all the stops and passed IsbeJJ to take second place, not far from Hull All 10 riders were on the front straightaway when Hull got the checkered flag.
