Morello masters Victory Spdwy By Larry McBride VICTORY, NY. AUG. 4 At on ly 12 years old. Marco Morello became the youngest Handicap main wi nner at Victory Speedway. Sta rting from the zero yard li ne Morello built an earl y lead in his hea t race to not ch h is first wi n of the evening. The semi was mor e difficult. however. as he trailed the Held for three of the six-lap s. On the founh circuit Morello made a sm ooth move (0 th e inside of turn two a nd passed th ree ri ders and overtook KeIli McMa hon for the lea d and win. An a lmos t im possibl e task seemed 10 be loomin g for you ng Morell o in th e ma in event . He had o nly a to-yard advantage over Randy Stauff, a nd 20 yards on Da mi en COrnwell and Mike Cortese. Both McBrides stayed side by side for two complete circuits befor e Le nny took a slight lead which he was a ble to ma in tain for the ba lance o f the four-lap fi na l a nd ano the r vic tory. T he first twO races of 1990 were ra in dates, but this weekend saw tem peratures over 100 degrees duri ng Saturday's well-a ttend ed open practice. Sunday was only a littl e m ilder. in the low 90s. and the hi gh temperatu res and a chewed-up race uack made [or exci ting ra cing, but no recor d lap times. PIR recent ly hosted a batch of car races. , and the aspha lt had numerous rouRh pa\ches to be either ridden over cautously or aV Oided. Keith Pinks taff said , " Sua ngely eno ug h, it was a good track right on the racing lin e. but it was very hard to pass becau se of a ll th e divo ts just off the lin e. His 500cc Vintage win was a cakewalk, but in Open Vintage he fin ished second in the first of two heats behind Duncan Craick on a fast 750cc Norton. Ni cky ha d to work a littl e harder for this on e, pi cking off Brian Knippenberg with only a lap to go to fin ish second. In the 250cc feature, Pa t Behrl e held off the Kent ucky attacker. After dropping the heat 10 T ommy Hayden , Behrle came back to grab the lead. Hayden stuck to him like glue. and in an effo rt to mak e a high -side pass. Knippenberg seized the opportu ni ty to drop int o the second slo t, leaving Hayden high on the o uts ide and, with no um e to reco ver he fin ish ed th ird . . Not letting tha t stop him . T ommy Hayden. return ed in the Open B class, riding a 500cc ROlaX to victory. T ommy took advantage of a n early lead . ho lding off Dan iel DOlSOn who, in an all-o r-noth ing move to gain pos iti on. wiped out. Jeff Cra ig was right on hand to take advantage of tha t move, taking the second slo t, close ly foll owed by thi rd -place finisher Dave Viel. All of th is action led to the featured Open A class, in which Dan Ingram, a Camel Pro . Series com petitor, fo und that winning here wasn 't going to be easy p ickings. Rex Fisher led the way in the heat race, bu t the tabl es were tu rned as Ingram too k the hol esh ot comi ng out of one with Fisher pressin g hard to find a hole. With only a few lap s to go, Fisher tried to make a move that not only failed but cost him his pos ition. By the fourth lap, Gordon had wor ked pa st Ro llins and Minor to take over the lead wh ere he would sta y to the finish . Rollins battled with Minor before pu llin g away to fin ish second. Gordon edged Rolli ns for the second-moto holeshot ah ead of Minor and J ose Rodriquez. Gordo n slo wly pu lled away hom Rollins 10 collect the overa ll win . Rollins held off Min or to earn the second -place tro phy. Results Hayden dominates Lawrenceburg Short Track By Steven Smith LAWRENCEBURG. IN, AUG. 3 The H ayden family took seven top fini shing po sition s home to Owensboro, Kentu cky, after cleaning up at the Lawrenceburg Motorcycle Speed way. Jenny Hayden led th e blitz with a win in the 60cc class. followed by a on e-two punch in the 80cc class in which sister Nicky took th e win with Jenny seco nd.
