Do uRlas Cornwell aces Champion Spdwy By Larry McBride 32 Mill er Draf t Ch ampion sh ip Series took o n th e Cal-Expo seven th-mile dirt arena in fro nt of . a good crowd. The l 80even t qualifying pr ocedure saw defending cha mp Schwartz, Christian a nd Collins tops in po int ga ther ing. Former cha m p Steve Lucero cam e up o ne shor t when he faced off with Collins in event num ber 12. Collins was faithful wi th his ga tes while Lucero rod e with grea t effort , but was unable to do any thi ng aga ins t th e British on slaught a nd had to set tle for eig ht points at th e end of regu lar racin~. The four semis saw those first three remain on the perfect side with Lu cero winning the first over Brad Ox ley and a disappointed Mike Faria. Ox ley's nigh t hadn't gon e well from the first round when he fini shed third beh ind Mark Hannah and Steve Furman. Oxley took second in the next round, fin ishing behind J im Sisemore, who had crashed o ut in the lirst round and wo uld th en get a good thunking in th e Con solati on. Fari a go t second to Collins in the first ro und, but followed with two win s to ma ke the semi s, but was third and out of co ntention for the rest, and no t happy abo ut the situa tion. Ed Castro was the fire of the night as he rode the rim side of the second round to win over Louis Kossuth , but couldn 't repeat the process in the semi that saw Collins W in over Kossuth and Castro , though he dazzled those assembled with the same style and got a good round of applause for his efforts, though for naught, Charlie Venegas started out with a second to champ Schwartz but zeroed the second round when he biffed and then won the third o nly to biff city the semi, but still stylish all the way. John Ho usto n, Jr. started out with a winner in controversy that continued when he ran the tape tha t broke when the referee pulled them apart, He was allowed to remain in the program, bu t came up wi th a problem and was then eliminated in a horrendous crash. La nce King m uddled his way to th e sem is, taking second to Schwartz, and then dazzled all W tth a great Co nsi wi n, keep ing Oxl ey at bay wi th Kossu th thi rd an d Sisemore sitting o ut wi th a slig ht concussion. T he ma in even t was anti·climactic as Collins sta rted o n po le for the th ird time and just p lain rod e off with th e wi n. Schwaru seemed inten t on catc h ing Collins, but so did Christian , a nd when Lu cero su ffered th e ' pangs of th e o th er two , it was Christia n wh o worked th e lin e fo r second o ver Schw artz. Kadlec collects Calamity Pass Enduro By Roger Dowden RAND. CO, IULY 15 Fritz Kad ec fou nd a rainy day i n th e pin e forest near Rand y, Colorado. to be the perfect sett ing for his fourth R MEC victory thi s season. T he Ca lam ity Pass Enduro differs from the oth er end ure s in th e Rocky Mountains by virtue of th e amo u nt of sing le-track tra il and the tig htness of thos e trails. To further add to th e eastern flavor, Mother Nature added rai n th at increased in in tensi ty as th e da y went on. The tig ht, slippery trails were evident ly m uch to Kadlec's liking, as he set a blistering pa ce, nearl y d uplicated by fellow Yam aha rid er J ohn Bru ckbau er. Both rid ers dropped o n ly 12 points, bu t Kadlec mastered th e tiebreakers for th e victory.
