Freling fast at 'Lodi MX By M ikki McBride LaD!, CA, ocr. 10 The Lodi Cycle Bowl began a series of three Saturday night motocrosses, with Shawn Freling taking tonight's 250cc Expert class win. In the first rnoto, Kawasaki rider Freling got off the line second behind Honda-mounted David Pile. Daryle Yount, on another Kawasaki , trailed th em both. Freling drove hard on Pile, almost catching him a couple of times, but Pile. held the lead to th e finish. In the second moto, Freling rocketed into the lead, and then just took off, leaving more and more distance between himself and Pile. The held was we ll spread out with Yount running in ' the third spot. The 500cc Juniors looked gr eat as Steve Miraglia, on a Honda, got th e jump on S.uzuk! rider ~omm.y Knight. Kevin Bncke!', astnde ~IS quick Honda scooted into the third spot but didn 't hold it too long as RICHLAND, WA, ocr. 17 The final round of the Yamaha Perpetual Gold Cup Motocross Series, held at Horn Rapids ORV Park, had Larry Ward and Phil Larson winning the Professional classes and the matching titles. Ward won the 125 and 250cc Pro classes to secure two titles and Larson won the Open. Pro class and the overall titles. Despite missing th e series opener, Ward demolished the remainder of the series in the 125cc Pro class, winning five of six events. The only other riders to stand at the victory podium in the class were Steve Oster and Tony Graves. In today's action, Ward rode to convincing I-I wins in the class, but had to come from seventh in moto one, passing Brian and Lowell Thomson, Brian Birkestol and . finally Graves for the win. In rnoto two Lowell Thomson made Ward work for the overall. Ward picked off Thomson in the late stages to take the overall win after I-I performances, also good for the overall title. Graves' 2-3 rides netted second with Birkestol, Brian Thomson and Lowell Thomson rounding out the top five overall. In the series, it was Ward, Graves and Scot Steffy filling the top three. Ward had it much easier than usual in the 250cc Pro class, mainly due to the fact that the rider that led the points battle coming into the event, Scou Tyler, was a no-show after breaking his leg at the sixth round of the series. All Ward had to do was finish last in both motos to tak e th e class title. but th at wasn 't hi s style and he wasn 't about to let his fans down. Ward sailed into unco n tested leads in both m otos, with onl y Graves staying anywhere close. Graves went 2-2 for second while Dale Wolff , Steffy and Lowell Thomson filled the top five. Overall in the series, Ward won with Graves second. Tyler was third despite missing the final round. In the Open Pro class Larson and his M.Robert/KSI/Yamaha Support YZ490 were too much for the competition as he took his fifth win of the series. Larson had to ride but one lap to win the series but, like Ward, he wanted to finish it off in style and dominated both motos for the title. T yler's demise made things easier for Larson. Of the seven events. Tyler took two wins and four seconds to take second in the series. Grayson Hart wa s third. ., Weber wails at Shady Hillside MX By Brad & Sharon Jones WINTERSET, lA, ocr. 4 It was John Weber who came away with the win, but Iowa star Mark Bolten took his Honda to an early lead in the l25cc A class at Shady Hillside Raceway. Bolten soon pulled away from the pack but missed a big berm and Brian Sorensen, Weber and Bryan Hunt slipped by before he got back on the track. Sorensen held off the charges of Weber and Hunt until the last lap. Sorensen crashed giving Weber and Hunt first and second. Sorensen still managed to finish third with Bolten fourth. 1 In moto two, Bolten smoked the start and left his competition in the dust. Weber cruised in second, knowing that he had the overall. Hunt and Sorensen followed dosely for the rest of the moto. KTM-mounted Ray Waddell took the holeshot in the Over-25 class, followed by Dave Brown and Brad Jones. JO'nes got sideways and let Gregg Poots and Jeff McDonald take over third and fourth. Poots moved by Brown for second, while Jones moved up to third. Poots and Jones collided sending Jones to take soil samples. Dana Hunt on a Honda 125 passed several riders to take o,:er fourth. Waddell took an easy WIO, with Poots and Brown rolling for second and third. In moto two, McDonald took a clean holeshot over Jones and Scott Hochstein. McDonald and Jones battled for several laps. Approaching the white flag, Jones b lock -passed McDonald. McDonald hit the dirt giving Hochstein second place. McDonald salvaged a third place finish while first moto winner Waddell fell on the stan and worked up through the pack, finishing sixth. on es took the overall wi th a 5- 1 inish. Results l 60: 1.
