Russ ell a nd Szarek squared off again in the final race of th e year, the combined A Superbi ke/Formula O ne event. Only three rid ers took to th e grid and as th e flag ' dropped Russell popped a huge wh eelieand Szarek went sideways in a big slide. Russell led th e dash to turn one and the race was over two 'laps later when Szarek crashed hard in the fast turn three. "My countershaft sprockei ca me off," exp lained Szarek afterwards. " I wa s downshifting but i t had no effect. The front end washed o ut when I hit the dirt. ': Ru ssellen tertained the crowd with wheelies for the remainder of th e race . Dav id Murray was the winner of the C'Produ ction, Formula Two and D Superbike event. . Murray diced wi th Steve Harrison in the C Production race ' but was able to stretch out a lead after Harrison experienced some wi ld rear wheel hopping while braking into the carousel. A. County Raceway. Ken Zahrt ran a strong second in the 25Qcc event a nd a m used hi mself with stylis h jumps when it became apparent tha t Mabery was u nca tch abl e. J eff Black came in third overall in the 250cc Pro race while Jeff Stanford followed Mabery across in both nio tos of the 125cc Pro event to take second overall in the class . Near the end of th e first 250cc moto, Mabery broke his rear shock bu t still won. Mabery took the shock off his 125 and rode the second 250cc moto wi th it. Surprisingly, it survived the extra weight an d hor sepower to give h im ' another easy win. Expe rt Dana Evens on jumped her Yamaha past a ll o thers as the gate fell for moto one of the Women 's class -. Another Expert, Tami Rice, was righ t on ' Evenson 's trail. Rice moved into . the lead a t the start of lap .two but Evenson did not bac k off. She stayed within 10 feet of Rice .:for the nex t five laps, look in g for a' .. passing 'o p p o rt u n i ty that never came. Rice took the moto, followed by Evenson and . Ga le " MX Mom" Webb. Mo to two was a carbo n copy of ·the -'m o to one ac tio n, except that Sheri Lawory mo ved into th ird when · Webb didn 't start. . Many off-camber roots, angled logs, and steep hills were th e . orde r of th e day . . Rid ers needed proper body placement o ver their bikes, or bo th rider a nd bike wo uld come slidi ng back dow n the hills. J ust to ad d a twist Ben edict also tossed in a muddy section. Kom er proved that he has mastered the ar t of log climbing as he tu rn ed .·in · the lowest score in section 14. T here, riders had to overcome a three foot log while executing a rig ht-ha nd turn. T hen they had to tu rn arourid an d go over th e same log further down wh ere th e branches lay all . twisted and gnarled. From there it was down in to a creek, a nd rig ht back u p the other steep side, around a few tr ees a nd bac k into th e roc k-strewn creek. R iders then blasted Up, th e ban k a nd over more logs, did a left , 'turn , and then fin ally straddled the ba nk between a tree a nd the dropof f to find the exit markers. .m Afte rwards Ko mer commented, "The sections were great, tracti8n .was there but was unpredicta bleii'A n ice trials." Voss Ferna ndez took first place-in th e Novi ce class with 24 points and seems to h a ve his ridi ng ba c k together a fter ironing out a few prob lems he .was having with .his bik e. McBride grabs win at I.odi MX By Mikki McBride LO DI, CA, OCT. 24 Chad McBride switched fro m short track to motocro ss and surprised ev eryo ne by wi n ni n g the 80cc Novice-Junio r class at th e Lodi Cycle Bowl. . . 5'e In th e fir st mota, Herbie Callen, as tride his fast little H onda, was firs t off th e lin e wi th Kawaskai-mounied McBride right beh ind him in second place. An ot h er H onda rid er; Anthony Freem an, was brin ging u p th e t hi r d spo t w i th Ya ma ha mou nt ed J ohn Azzaro in fourth. McBride stayed right o n Callen 's tai l all the way u ntil Ca lle n went dow n going o ver some j umps. McBride ' swooped into first pl ace and manage d to gain a prett y long lead a t the chec kered flag. In the secon d m o to , Freema n gained the ho lesh o t off the line with McBri de again rid ing a close second. Freem an wo u ld ex tend his lead on the straights a nd McBride wou ld catch him on the ju mps comi ng along the infield. Ca llen lost it on the p la teau j u mp which allowed Azzaro to pass for third a nd Co ry Yarrow to nab fourth on a Yam aha. On the thi rd lap, Freem an was do wn o n a jump af ter leapin g into the air and McBride again took over the fir st spot. McBride was over the fin ish li ne first to get the overall win. In th e 250 -'500cc J un ior class Ran dy Law managed to o ut ride Mike Menning, Kris Kiser a nd Dan McDon nell to grab first. .
