powered machine. James. riding a stoc k machine in the Modified class. took command of second place. Peter Yurfest was in third. Tim Robison and H onda MB-5-mounted N eil FuJce wer e battling in fourth and fifth . The LOp three rid ers held their position to th e finish with FuJce passing Robison for fourth place near th e end of the race. The second heat was a virtual repeat of th e fir st with Lucien e taking the win in front of James. Yurfest, FuJce and Ro biso n. There was a sh owdown in th e 0149 pound Expert St o ck class between Dennis Horton and H en ry Rodarte. The start was a dead drag between the two . with Horton go ing into th e first corner with th e lead. At the halfway point Rod arte. who was trying to find a way around Horton. leaned too far over in a corner and spun out. giving H ort o n some breathing room. Hort o n went on to win. although Rodarte was ga in ing ground ill the fin ish . _ Seco nd hea t action saw a fierce battle between the two ri ders as Horton once again took the early lead with Roda rte on his tail. On the seco nd lap. Horton took a corner a little wid e and Rodarte knifed underneath him. Tom Rice. soaring behind him in lap two . go t a little crooked a nd crashed. Chris Lock e. Harold Matthews a nd Earl May piled on top of him as th ey landed off th e blind jump. R ice was forced to retire for the da y with what appeared to be a bruised wrist. May sat out with major fram e damage to his brand new bike. Alan Andreu finis hed seco nd. Chuck Bell charged fro m a n end of the pack star t to claim third ahead of Kyle Tallent and Matthews. DeVane finessed his way into th e lead at the start of rnoto two with Andreu . Bell and Matthews pushing him through the first turn. Andreu later said. " In - th e fir st mot a DeVane took th e holesh ot and was go ne. In mot a two I was able LO sta y on him for a few la ps. th en I mad e some mi stak es and he pulled a way. " Andreu left in hi s wak e so me hot a nd heavy ac tion as he chased after th e lead er. Matthews pa ssed up Bell sca ling a jump. but Bell charged back aro und him. They diced to th e end. Bell held o n to claim th e third pl ace fini sh ahead of Matthew s. Keith Fox. after starting dead last. worked h is wa y up LO finish fifth. Wh en th e ga tes dropped at th e start of th e first 250/ 500cc A cla ss moto Andreu bea t the pack to th e fir st turn. But DeVane cut unde r a nd a lso o pe ned the door for Ma y and J ohn Reinho lt LO ge t aro und. DeVane pulled away and cruised out front.
