Byrd grabbed the holeshot in the 10-lap sprim ahead of Yamaha- mounted Craig Martin, Willie Adams (Kaw) and Mike Williams (Yam) but by lap three Martin reeled in Byrd and passed him. Byrd repassed Martin in turn one while Williams wem ahead of Adams to take over third. Martin turned up the wick to repass Byrd as the two riders started LO cut some very quick laps, leaving the field in their wake. Byrd repassed Martin in LTaffic and made it stick. Meanwhile, Williams on an FJ-600 was holding off Adams to take third. After the race a modest Byrd said, "I found I could make a lot of time in turns five, six, and seven so I just LTied to be smooth and not make too many mistakes." David Coons piloted his GSXR 750 imo the lead at the start of the Superbike B race and led for two laps umil Byrd found his rhythm. Behind Byrd and Coons, Brian Joder, also on a Suzuki, was holding down third with Martin on the move in fourth. On lap ~t! Williams carefully nursed his FJ600 to the win with Carlo Rao in second. Steve May came home a dis tam third, the only three riders to finish. Tim BergsLTom demonstrated his abilities by grabbing the holeshot from Tom Dahl and winning the Superbike D comest. Bergstrom was cutting some very quick laps on his RZ350 as Dahl started to close the gap near the end of the IO-Iap sprim. U nfortunately, Bergstrom was just too far ahead. Rick Williams was all alone in third on his RZ. Williams was several seconds ahead of fourth overall finisher Norm Benedum on a box stock RZ. The Vimage race was run concurrently with SSD and Craig Skinner (Tri), John Scott (Tri) and Mick Frew (Yam) were going back and forth all race long. SCOlL wem around Skinner's Trident on lap four but Frew was moving up steadily on his TD3. Frew got past a fading Skinner on lap six and set his sights on Scott. Frew was right behind Scott on lap seven and then made a daring pass to take over first on lap eight. Frew scored the win with runner'up Scott ahead of third place Skinner. In Vimage Two Les Johnson (BSA) beat the best efforts of Kirk MitcheIl (BSA) and David Chrone (Duc). Terrence O'Brien (Suz) mounted a charge late in the Novice race to beat Tony Rome (Kaw) and Robert Bechtel (Yam). John Adams (Yam) led the early laps but went down as did RZ rider Mark Hensley. Stock A and B, run in the pouring rain, was red-flagged shortly after the start when Brian Joder crashed in turn 12. Byrd led the restart but Stock B rider Coons took over on lap three. / Although going very slowly the entire field finished the race without incident. Kevin Elliot scored a win .in Stock A on his Yamaha while runnerup Richard Kohn (Kaw) beat Cynthia Harris (Kaw). Stock B champ Coons barely held off the last lap charge of David Wright (Yam) as Byrd took third.
