finish'in the first heaL Kiesler anli ' Bowen bauled for position with Bowen taking second and the overall win. Kiesler finished fourth. Sipes, who had a bad start, finished fifth. James Alexander took the holeshot in the Senior class, but Bill Sullivan zoomed by LO take over first and win the moto. Sullivan was cl1ased by second place finisher Tim Smith, and by Glenn Cutchens in third. Sullivan rushed to the lead in mota two LO be chased again by Smith and Cutchens. Smith passed Sulli van over a section of jumps, but Sullivan stayed onSmith's rear fender. Smith, finally, stretched out his lead to take the mota and overall win. Steve Davis claimed the overall win in the 250cc B class with a I-I score. Andrews sweeps MSTopener By 'Peggy Adamic MALVERN, OH, MAR. 16 Yamaha rider Fred Andrews .opened the motocross racing season at Moto Sport Trails in his winning way by sweeping both motos in the 125cc AlOpen A money class. In the first moto, Andrews led from the drop of the gate through the checkered flag. Dave Hand, Harold Robinson and John Ruper rounded out the top IouI' through the first four laps when Robinson and Ruper faded badk, making way for earl Hand, who finished third. The second moto was a rerun of the first as Andrews and the Hand brothers Dave and earl each finished in the same three places they had claimed in the first moto. 10 other 250cc action, B class TideI' Dave Jazbee took LOp honors, finishing second in both motos. In the first moLO, Shawn Gates finished ahead of Jazbee, Gates taking second place for the day, and in the second moLO, Jon Agin led the pack through the checkered flag with Agin finishing third avera II for the da y. In the 250cc C race, Dave Harden swept the class with two first-place moLO finishes. In the youth action, seven-year-old Karl Scott took home the top honors in the Pee Wee class wi th dou blemoLO wins. Chris Skeels changed the lead several times with SCOLL in the second moLO, but it was SCOll at the finish line when the checkered nag was out. Mike Katin was another double winner LOday, as he rode his 60cc Kawasaki ahead of David Berris, Bryan Bellinger and Karl SCOLL. All four of these young riders finished both moLOS in the same order. Dale Spangler was awarded first place in the l25cc A money when Fred Andrews and Scott Watkins were each docked a lap for false starts in the first moLO of competition. Andrew took the second moLO with Spangler finishing second, Spangler taking the overall. I I By Angie laRocco PORTLAND, MI, MAR. 16 Frosty temperatures greeted more than 400 eager riders at the first of the six-race Silverdome Supercross qualifying series sponsored by the Michigan Motorcycle Dealers Association. Hi-Point sponsored, Kawasakimounted Brian Swink swept both motos of the Senior Mini class with Eric McClear (Yamaha Support, Maxima) holding down the second position. Chad DeHoop (Yam), rounded out the lOp three. Yamaha, Scon and Dynamic MXFashions-spo'nsored Mike LacRocco holeshot in the first moto of the I25cc Junior class, but temporarily lost control and the lead 10 Mark BoTtnum (Yam). Recovering quickly, LaRocco regained the lead over fellow Yamaha ridees Jeff Beckington and Greg Bowen. The second molO found Malcolm Smith, Bell Helmetbacked Bowen pulling out the lead from start to finish, earning him the overall point with Beckington (Scott, Dynamic MX Fashions) locked into second. The l25cc B class tallied 104 entrants, which were divided into three qualifying races. Mark BoTtnum, Kenny Kizzar and Jamie McClean LOpped their heats and squared off for the final. Marty Burt (Kaw), from Ontario, Canada and Kizzar pulled out from the pack with Kizzar pushing hard in second. Burr and Kizzar raced size by side until Burr lost it, giving Kizzar the second moLO win and the overall. McClean took over second, awarding him the same overall position with David BeckingLOn (Precision Fabricating) rolling in with a third overall. In 125ccAaction Kawasaki-moumed, Scon, Malcolm Smith-sponsored John Grewe and Todd DeHoop (Yamaha, Gear, Braco Trailers) took immediate charge of the deeply rutted track. Grewe held on for the first molO win with DeHoop pushing hard in second. Grewe and DeHoop repeated their attack in the second molO with Grewe passing DeHoop, claiming the first for the day with DeHoop a strong second.
