Englund wins WyomingMX By Larry Johnson CHEYENNE, WY, MAR. 16 You can count on one hand the times Arlo Englund (Yam) has raced MX in the last three years, but today he showed the 250cc Pros a trick or two. He and Kip Sandell (Yam) broke quickly away from the pack in moto one. Sandell worked past Englund in lap one, and the twosome ran uncontested throughout the race. When they approached two lapped riders on the last circuit, Engl und set up for the pass. Three turns from the finish, Sandell stayed high in the berm and Englund snuck underneath aU three riders to steal the win. The second molO started the same with Englund ahead of Sandell. But Sandell beg-,m dropping positions after swallowing a rock, and Englund led a seven-bike freight train all the way lO the checkers. At the finish in close formation behind Englund were Jim Mitchell (Suz), Corey Cope (Kaw), Derek Brown (Kaw), Albert Firestine (Yam), Dave Newell (Kaw) and Sandell. SCOtt Kilgore (Kaw) held on lO capture the Open Pro overall, but Mitchell, on a Suzuki RM465, gave him fits in the process. Kilgore led the first half of moto one, before Mitchell overtook Kilgore after Mitchell worked through traffic. Kilgore followed John Bruckbauer (Hus) through turn one of moto two and took the lead a few turns later. This time he pulled away and took the win. Mitchell eventually reached second after another poor start. Mark Poindexter (Yam) had his way with the Vet Experts, as he led both moLOS from start to finish. He received no threats during round one, but Jeff Thomas (Yam) stayed close all of moto two. Thomas also finished second in mota one, earning the runnerup overall position. Bill Perri ton (Suz), whose father is the promoter, was not a very gracious host. He won both 125cc Amateur and both 250cc Amateur motos, finishing ahead of Cory Perri ton (Hon), Bill's cousin, in each class. INVADERS M.C. HARE 'N HOUND. Husqvarna-mounted Chip Howell outlasted over 400 riders to win the 16th Annual Chapparals D-37 Coyote Derby Enduro at Red Mountain. Howell also won the overall at last year's D37 Not So Tuff E Nuff in May over a large field, putting himself at the lOp of the list of local enduro riders always in the hunt. While Howell took the overall for the lOO-mile, three-loop event, Rick Daniel (Hus) grabbed the top spot for the two loop Family Racing Assoc. competition which was run in conjunction with the D-37 enduro. Leaving the pit area at Teagle Wash, loop one jetted directly across Trona Road west and played among the foothills and tight washes. Loop two he-dded north to the terrain surrounding Charlie's Place with the famous moonrocks setting the stage for the special test. While we he-drd many good comments about this year's Coyote Derby, everyone is still talking about the outstanding third loop. The riders blasted down pipeline road and into the sand hills. The entire loop was just like the old days. tight and quick switchback canyons; jetting around bushes and cactus where no trail was evident as if it was a supercross track in the sandhills. To top it 0[[, the special test in the supercross sand hills was set up at 36 mph. The overall scores were so close, that the lOp 15 places ranged from Howell's score of five to Scott Jacobsen's score of nine in 15th position. Second overall went to the Honda rocket of Robb Mesecher, losing six points, just one point better than .third-overdILBill. Fulmer Jr. (Hon) Foo1h~1 Sylm.r.
