C"'I1U 11l1ll)1:a·.~ riders were greeted by near-perfect conditions on the sand track aided by three days of rain before the event. Phil Larson took the victory in the Open Pro class, and Mike Larson did the trick in the 250cc Pro contest each having their own race way out in front of the pack in both mOlOS. In 125cc Pro action, Larry Ward was the leader 0(( the line, followed closely by Jamie Munson (Hon), Scott Steffy (Yam) and Corey Klandt (Yam)_ Ward and Munson quickly pulled away from the pack, while Steffy and Klandt fought over third_ Munson closed even with Ward several times, but had to settle, for second, with Klandt winning the battle for third a long way back. The second moto looked like a repeat of the first until Munson fell hard, giving Ward an easy victory. Marvin Waldo and Klandt had a dose race for second, with Klandt having the advan tage a t the checkered. Many McCullum led the stan of the 125& C'chiss, with' Ji'ro Larson (Yam), John Fonier (Kaw) and Pat Jaquish (Hon) in tow. Jaquish quick,Iy moved into third, and the three front runners pulled away fTOm the pack. McCullum fell in the mud on the second lap, giving the lead to Larson, with Jaquish pressuring from behind. One lap later, Larson fell in the same spot as McCullum had fallen, handing a big lead to Jaquish. who cruised to victory. Despite failing three times, McCullum nearly caught second-place finisher Larson at the checkered. The second moto started like the first, with McCullum leading Larson and Jaquish. Jaquish moved into second when Larson fell on the second lap, and then took the lead when McCullum missed a shift going up the hiliLO the finish_ On the last lap, a stalled rider made Jaquish go around a berm, and he stalled the bike. McCullum snuck by on the inside to take the vicLOry ahead of Jaquish and Larson. Jaquish took the overall via his 1-2 rides over McCullum (3-1) and Larson (2-3). Consistency paid 0(( for Scott Reiman (Kaw) in the 250cc A class as he combined 2-2 finishes for first overall. Curt Stanaway (Hon) narrowly edged Reiman in the first moto, but couldn't put it together in the second, when he was caught jumping the gate and had to start backwards. Stanaway's bad luck continued, as an early fall in moLO two put him back at sixth at the checkers. Mike Harunan did just the opposite; he finished way back in fifth the first moLO, but gassed it up in moto two for the win and second overall. Running way out in fTOnt of the pack was Brian Thompson (Kaw), who rode in both the 250 and l25cc A classes - back LO back - in exhibition status so as not to jeopardize his Intermediate standing.
