By Marty Gregory and Ironman Mike MURPHY, ID, MAR. 9 Passing Reed Bright when the Husky rider's chain derailed following a mud bog on the third loop, L&M Cycle/Hi- Ron Wehr won the SIDRA Baghdad Classic in Murphy, Idaho. Poim-sponsored Ron Wehr (Kaw) fought off Bright's determined charge to claim his first-ever ove.rall win in the SIDRA opener: The Baghdad Classic. Wehr and Bright, who fought tooth-and-nail for the entire 78 miles of Idaho desert, were less than a bikelength apart at the line with Wehr getting the nod at Fay Barnes' finish flag. Put on by the Desert Raiders M.C., the Baghdad is the first evem of the season for the Southern Idaho Desert Racing Association. A fast, bumpy course laid out over the sand and sagebrush plateau south of the Snake River favored the bold and the tough. Last year's runaway winner, Dan Huskey (Suz), had problems on the first loop, (breaking a spark plug and taking a header), yet, miraculously, came storming back to finish a solid third overall - only two minutes behind Wehr and Brighl. The race's big surprise was new Expert Steve Moore (Hon) who "passed the last two guys at the smokebomb" and assumed a big lead over the 82-rider field. Moore, as-of-yet without sponsors, was hundreds of yards in front of his nearest pursuers when he lost the ribbon and had to circle around on top of a hill to get his bearings. Bright and Wehr closed the gap and, coming in from the first 27-mile loop, it was Moore with only about 10 seconds on the pack. Reed Bright (L8cM Cycle/Hi-Poim/HRP Husqvarna XC250) had a faster pit stop and headed out for the second loop in first place with Moore and Ron Wehr right on his tail. The second lap was run over the same course as the first(with the elimination of the smokebomb run section) and, at the second loop finish check, it was Bright and Wehr still locked in a dead heat with Reed having a slight edge as the pair pushed their bikes across the highway to head out for the final loop. Steve Moore was still in the hunt and Dan Huskey had worked his way up to about 10th. The third lap told the tale as racer after racer streaked off in pursuit of Bright and Wehr. Hi-Poimdistributor "XXL" Leroy Smith (KX500) was lodged firmly in the top 20 and was putting in one of his best rides ever. Leaping back on his bike with an almost audible groan from the rear suspension after pushing across the road, Leroy blasted off toward an evemual 17th overall and a convincing Vets class win. ISDE Bronze medalist Jeff Miller (Coors Extra Gold KX-125) was right up there, too, but ju tdidn'thavetheooniestocontend ~ .... 1.\ , J I. ~ j II "i , • • ) .' . ) for the overall on the fast course which favored a bigger motor. Miller finished first I25cc and seventh overall. Attrition started to work on the boys on that third loop. Running in the top five was KTM-moumed Joe Wood, who slartedoff from the highway only to come pushing back within five minutes - prognosis: damaged shifter. Steve Moore, attempting to blast back to the from, suffered a major crash and had to settle for an eventual ixth overall, second 250cc Expert. . Meanwhile, up from and cookin', Reed Bright had pulled it out on Ron Wehr and built up a winning lead of several hundreds yards. But disaster struck when Bright went through the infamous mud hole of loop three. Pulling over and fran tically trying to re-chain his Husky, Bright could only watch and mutter as Wehr streaked by to grab the lead with less than 10 miles to go. Back after it, Reed caught up and the pair reappeared from the Idaho desert with Wehr holding on to a scam threesecond lead as the racers let it all hang out down the final half mile beside the highway to the finish. The last hundred yards saw Bright pull even with Wehr as both men wem WFO for the flag. Ronnie had just a touch of power on Reed as the Kawasaki 250 edged Bright'S 1985 Husky at the line in a tremendous finish after 78 miles of racing! The Desert Raiders put on a fine race which finished 62 out of 82 riders. Serious injuries were not reponed and, other than hapless Dick Rockrohr taking a rock in the goggles and streaming blood into the pits at the finish, no one was measurably hurl. Mike Thuleen had worked his way up to what looked to be a good finish in the 250cc A class on his 1986 CR250 when he got stuck "big time" in the third loop mud hole. Mike did escape eventually, however, and wound up 57th overall with a very, very diny motorcycle. Class C star Ricky Henson (YZ490) rode his first-ever desert race (he tried motocross last year) and did a fi ne job to finish 30th overall and founh Open Amateur. Ricky had ridden the OMC's Indoor Shon Track the night before and was last seen with a big grin amongst the grime (he found the mud hole, tool) being congratulated by his nemesis-on-thehort track,Rod Reynolds, who was pressed imo service as the "Fastest Pit Crew."
