Turner tops Ascot MXopener By Mitch Friedman GARDENA, CA, MAR. 21 Opening night ofthe 1986 Continental Motosports Club (CMC) Ascot night motocross season was delayed a week due • 40 to heavy rainfall, but when it finally came, 415 riders showed up to do battle. According to CMC President Stu Peters, "This is the biggest rider draw sinGe Irwindale ran races." Yamaha rider Ron Turner started the season off just as he ended it last year - by winning the 125cc Pro class; he was also sixth in the 250cc Pros. Turner started the first 125cc moto in third behind "Wild Willie" Surratt and second-place rider Tim Rutherford. Rutherford crashed over the 'IT jump on lap three, which dropped him to sixth place and moved Turner up to second. Turner (Yamaha Pro Support/Terry Varner Racing/ O'Neal USA) pushed Surratt for first place, but could not find a way around the Honda rider. While Surratt and Turner motored away from the pack, David Graff, Brian Manley and Kenny Clifton raced for third. Graff shut the door on all attempts from the other riders to drop him from third, and the top five finished in that order. Turner graLbed the holeshot to begin moto two for the l25cc Pros, while Surratt and Manley ran right on his rear tire. On lap two, Surratt fell, which dropped him back to seventh. Graff got by Manley for second, but that only lasted a lap, as Graff crashed in a slow turn and got restarted in 11th. Meanwhile, Surratt was on the move, picking up two spots in one lap. With two laps remaining, Surratt was right behind third-place rider Rutherford. Rutherford blocked Surratt until the last lap, when Rutherford bobbled in the [Urn before the 'IT jump, letting Surratt past for third. Turner took the checkered flag and the win twO turns ahead of Manley. Manley grabbed the holeshot in moto one of the 250cc Pro class, with Team Yamaha's "Gentleman Jim" Holley in tow. Holley showed the crowd on hand why he's got the factory ride as he passed Manley with little trouble, then pulled to a threeturn lead over the rest of the field. Surratt began the race in fourth, then passed Russ Wageman for third on lap three; Surratt tried Manley until the last lap, when he shot by in a whoop section to take over second_ Ascot regulars Todd Peterson and Turner renewed their rivalry, as they raced handlebar-to-handlebar for fourth place. Turner tried a last-lap pass three turns from the finish, but Peterson shut the door on him, and Turner hit the Honda rider·s rear wheel and went off course, but didn't lose his fifth-place spot. At the s-tart of moto two, Holley jumped into the immediate lead, with Surratt right on his rear wheel. That only lasted a lap, as Holley slid out at the finish line and dropped to second, ahead of Peterson. Holley and Peterson gained on leader Surratt toward the end of the moto, but ran out of time and settled for 2-3. Surratt too.k 60 BEG: I. Jeff Willoh (Kaw); 2. Shawn Mcintosh (Kaw); 3.
