OTHG at DeAnza
By Glenn Worrall
The 250cc Pros also featured furious racing and constant changes.
Eric Sackett, who was on the gas all
day, streaked to the front of his class to
start the first moto. But in the end it
was scrappy Pat S'hields with tlle first
moto win. Shields exploded to holeshot the second moto, but Sackett
motored right on by. Johner Kight,
back on the track after a long layoff,
was also jousting for the lead. Sackett
looked quick, but the Motorcycle
Tire Center/Dixie Kawasaki-sponsored rider couldn't stay on two wheels
for any length of time, and crashed
two or three times during the moto.
This opened the door for Scott U nderwood. Underwood, racing on an older
model M-Star, wasted no time in
winning the mota and wrapping up
, the 250cc Pro title. Shields finished in
second with Kight third and Sackett
fourth.
Honda of Las Vegas' Chris Trickle
popped the holeshot in race two
ahead of Frank Singer and Hodge.
Trickle held the throttle open and
continued to lead but Singer, Pacino
and Flores fell in behind him to form
a four-man freight train for the lead.
On the white £lag lap, Flores had
battled past Pocino for third place.
The tOP four positions stayed the
same for the rest of the race. Overall
results put Flores in first, Singer
second, Pacino in third.

SUNNYMEAD, CA, MAR. 23
Honda rider Mike Langness
claimed the Over The Hill
Gang Amateur victory at DeAnza Cycle Park this weekend
after two moto-Iong dogfights with
Yamaha-mounted Jerry Johnson and
Carlos Marin (Hon). It was Johnson
leading the charge to the tOP of the
hill as the first moLO got underway,
but his lead was short-Lived after he
killed the mOLOr in turn one scattering riders in every direction. ATKmounted Randy Klassen appeared in
the lead in turn twO, ahead of Greg
St. Clair (KTM) and Langness. Klassen slowed allowing St. Clair LO take
the lead, followed by Langness and
Johnson, who quickly recovered after
his first turn mistake. Langness
roosted past the KTM rider to take
the lead at the half way stage with.
Johnson close on his tail. Johnson
made his move with one lap remaining LO take the checkered with Langness only inches behind in second.
Klassen traded his ATK for his
dad's Honda LO grab me second-moLO
holeshot with St. Clair, Langness
and Honda pilot Marin coming up
fast after a slow start. Marin blasted
his way into second place and battled
fiercely with Langness thoughout
the molO, but a determined Langness
managed to hold off me challenge
and was rewarded with the overall
vicLOry ahead of Marin and third
overall St. Clair.
lronman Ron Ryer pushed his
Yamaha to win the Expert class after
competing in four molOS. David
Hassel edged out SCOtt Rissman and
Greg Humber (Yam) in turn one of
the first moLO. Honda ace Marino
Bastionell recovered from a slow start
and berserked his way into the lead
after two laps, with Hassel and Ryer
moving past Rissman. Bastionell held
off the challenge of Hassel to take the
moLO win with Ryer a close third. As
they lined up for moLO twO, Bastionell failed LO make the start, and it
was Hassel once again nailing the
holeshot. Humber closed on Hassel
by the end of the lap, allowing Rissman and Ryer to battle for second. As
Hassel began LO tire Ryer blasted into
the lead and after passing Rissman
led LO the flag for the overall win.
