Robert's 41 point loss matched that of overall B winner Jim Berby. More close racing for B class trophies was in the Open and Vet classes. Open class winner David Dougan rode hiS Husky 10 a score of 51 points. The scores for second were even tighter as David Waldin's 57 edged out Eric Strahl by two. Closest in B c1as competition was for Vet class honors, as only four points separated the top three positions. Tonight was shaping up in similar fashion as Green controUed the race in the later stages, which led the Lake Stevens residen t 10 the checkered flag for another win over Fay. Steve Aseltine and AMA Junior Brian McGonigal (KTM) rode in the third and fourth places throughout the main 10 fini h in the positions, beating Stro~g, AMA Junior sensation Chns Fllzhugh (Han) and ovice points leader Randy Roose' (Han). Strong took stranglehold of the 250cc Pro main event, launching off the line 10 lead Aseltine, who will be an exceptional Pro once he reaches age. Aseltine hou~ded from the rear while a pack conslstmg of motocross Pro Rick Albee, AMA Expert Don Wilson and McGonigal (Yam) argued for third behind the leaders. trong had built up a small lead. with Aseltine scheming up a tri ky mov from behind. Aseltine wouldn't find enough room 10 move ahead of the AMA Pro and wound up in the ba k seat position, just as he did when up against Green and Fay In the Open Pro main. Aseltine's Yamaha waterpumper held 0(£ Mcgonigal's similar mount for second at the checkered flag. McGonigal put on a charge, not losing hi lOuch on a 250 after a sensational Novice year last year and lOok third ahed of Albee, Wilson, A.J. Rosetel roosts at Hannegan By Paul Nielsen BELLINGHAM, WA, JUNE 7 Strong, Greenside to Bellingham win By Clay Ught BELLINGHAM, WA, JUNE 9 Kirk Strong made a return to the victory podium at Hannegan Speedway's AMA SemiPro quarter-mile short track by 34 winning the 250cc Pro main event on his Simpson/Seattle Honda-sponsored machine. Honda-supported Randy Green continued to be unstoppable, winning the Open. Pro mam convincingly, beating Nauonal number 13 Mickey Fay's Wood-Rotax. Green's American Honda/Simpson/Lillie/Pro Fuel/N-D/Hi· Point/Bel-Ray 600 was fresh off a trophy dash win in the Ope~ Pro portion, and came back charging to lead the Open Pro main event while Fay loomed in second on t~e M.arushin/ Ammco Tools/HI-POlOt/ Wood-RoLax_ Fay and Green battled David Roestel won the Open B class at Hannegan Speedway, then came back to win a second malO, topping the Over 30 class, riding in a steady rain and on a very muddy track. There were sev~l protests and in some matos, nellher the riders nor the scorers were real sure of finishing positions. In the 250cc A class, Mark Cunningham got the holeshOl, but fell in the first lap and was dIsplaced by Kevin Zilkey. On the fifth lap, Cunningham took back first place. Zilkey came in second and Ryan TIerney passed Rueben Springman on the last lap 10 take third. Tierney, riding his second mota, led the way when the gatefell, in the I25cc A race. Zilkey was caught in the gate and came out last. Tierney fell and gave the lead to Brent Melvin, but only briefly. He took it back at the end of lap three, and by lap sev.en had a nine-second lead on MelVin. They finished in that order. The l25ccCmoto, with 19 riders in the sLarting gate, saw Thad Bal!smider first around the corner on hIS Kawasaki. Thad had his ups and downs on the muddy course, and after getting lUck in a rut, finished fifth. the last trophy. Johnny Gardner (Han) won the first mota after a long duel with Craig Christen and Tony Richards. After a last place start, Tony Flores (Yam) brought his Moto-X Fox-sponsored Yamaha up to third pJace at the checkers. In malO two Flores' fourth-place start put him nearer to the leaders prior to his onslaught. By mid-race he had reeled everyone in and was in front for good; a 3-1 night for first <;>ver~lI. Craig Christian turned 10 hIS best performance at Baylands in 1984 to hang on for second and a second overall. Watilo, Burgett burn Mulkey MX By Clay Ught McMINNVILLE, OR, JUNE 10 Former 500cc National Champion Rick Burgett won the second 250cc Pro mota for the overall win at Mulkey O.R.V. Park's motocross today. Burgett burned the class on his Cagiva U.S.A.! PJIIMoto-X Fox Cagiva while young Robby Watilo (Cycle Country/RW Racing/Answer Products/Kaw) took the 125cc Pro class using a devastating I-I score. Watilo wasted little time putting the I25cc Pros behind him allhe start of the first malO. John Buyas (Yam), Jess Dircks (Hon) and Grayson Hart (Kaw) were in hOI pursuit, but Watilo broke free to settle into a large lead. The rough course would take its toll on many riders, and the first victim was second-placed Buyas who at the midway point, went out with problem , handing Dir k second. Han picked 0(£ Dircks 10 make the order Watuo, Hart, Dircks and Larry HoefenbredJ (Suz). Han was next 10 see second get out of his grasp ~!J.en Dircks moved back into the poSlllOn. Hoefenbredl charged past Dircks in the late stages of the malO to set his ighlS on Watilo, who proved to be unslOppable. Dircks was then picked off by Jim Anderson (Kaw), who flew to third place. Dircks came back 10 haunt the second mota, but was quickly displaced by Richie Lee (Han). Lee and Dircks continu d to battle whtle three Kawasakis banged bars behind, consisting of riders Anderson, Hart and Watilo, who pUla moveon theduo.1O ride up on Lee' rear wheel. Wallio got around Lee and then picked-off Dircks to take the lead and another lonely win. Lee, who was plagued by sour luck in mota one, lOok a second ahead of Dircks, Jere Meeker (Cag) and HoefenbredJ. Roseburg Honda's Rodney "KilIer" Keller led the first 250cc Pro contest through the whoops with Rick Bozarth (Suz), David Hett;nga (Suz) and Burgett in chase. Burgett stormed by Hettinga to close on Bozarth, who let the former ational champ past after a three-lap baule. Keller had an easy ride going until Burgeu, on the 190cc Cagiva, caught up, and the two left the competition behind in their war for first. Kevin White (Han) settled into third. Keller was finalIy passed by Burgett, who was closely trailed by Keller's Honda. The baulecamedown to the last lap when Keller stuck a wheel in front 10 take the malO W10 over Burgett. Third went to White, with Bozarth and Hettinga rounding out the lOp five. Second stanza action saw Hettinga grab the short-lived lead while Bozarth, Troy Folck (Han) and Lange (Yam) dueled for early positions. Hettinga dropped back, alIowing Bozarth to lead while Keller and Burgett diced behind. Burgett was the luckier of the two as KeIler crashed and "the Lumberjack" charged on through traffic to dice the remainder of the mota with Bozarth to win.
