Friend ran the remainder of the moto out in front, while Norfolk faded in the late laps to make an interesting last lap with Molder and Stork close behind, but Nonolk again managed to hold onto second when the checkers flew, and wound up with the overall win. Friend picked up second overall ahead of Molder's 3-3 tally for third, with Berry's 1-6 put him fourth to Stork's 5-4 seore. Results 125 PRO: 1. Benny Norfolk (y.mt 2. Mike Fritlnd (Hon); 3. 0... Serrano splits with Watmore at 'SaguroMX By Sandy Berm TUCSON, AZ, JUNE 9 National Pro Carlos Serrano Showed up at Tucson's Saguaro Raceway with his Husky 250CR, ready to battle the local 86 hotshoes in the sweepstakes race. Ron Watmore settled for second in the second sweepstakes molO on his YZ250, but took the victory in the opening round. In thefirstmoto, Watmorejum~ to an early lead off the line, followed by Serrano, Tim LickJiter, Rick Wat- more, and Michael Goodrich. SCOll Keyes, on his KXI25, was in sixth. The batLle for the lead was hot from the start, and Watmore soon fell prey to Serrano's passing experience. As the riders jockeyed for positions, the race came near a close, with Serrano in the lead. On the II th lap, the two leaders tangled on the top hill corner, and the duo went down. Watmore was the quicker to recover, and went on to win the race. Serrano was the runner-up, with Rick Watmore in third. The only two 125cc machines to survive the race finished in fourth and fifth, with Keyes and Goodrich aboard. Serrano, hot for the victory, grabbed the holeshot in the second moto, but crashed, Jelling SCOll Davi into the lead position. That didn't last for long, however, as Serrano moved back into the lead for good. Rick Watmore held third position until he suffered rear wheel failure. Back in seventh place, Ron Watmore made his mid-moto charge toward the front, passing Lickliter, Davis, Keyes and Goodrich, to move into second behind Serrano. Even with his great amount of momentum, Watmore couldn't catch the fleeing Serrano. At the finish line, Serrano took the overall victory over Watmore's 1-2 second place. The 125 pilots rounded the top four positions. didn't earn him the overall win as Socco kept his cool and cruised through the checkers first again for a perfect 1-1 score. Michetti was second with a 2-2, while Smith landed third overall with a 3-4. Results PEE WEE: 1. Michael Asp'in (Yam); 2. Cainin Wilkenson (Suz); 3. I.n H.lsell (y.m). DIV II: 1. Jon Pauls (Yam); 2. Ran W.._ a.-naka Super Socco salls at DeAnza Cycle Park By Michael Gillies SUNNY MEAD, CA, JUNE 3 Unicorn Agent Johnny Socco (Hon) was no myth in the 250cc Beginner class at DeAnza Cycle Park today: He took the win each time out ahead of Mike Michetti (Hon). Socco grabbed the holeshot in the first moto with john Singletary (Yam) and R,ick Stewart (Kaw) fighting over second: By the end of the first lap Stewart and Michetti passed Singletary, and Michetti did the same to Stewart a lap later. On the third lap, Socco stalled, leuing Michetti slip by and build a small lead. Suzuki-mounted Tom Smith worked his way up from second-to-Iast to third by the fifth lap, but it was too late LO catch the leaders. Socco slow ly reeled in Micheui and passed him with three laps remaining making the order Socco, Micheui, Smith, and Singletary. Singletary reached the first turn ahead of Micheui, Smith, and Socco in the second moto, but went down in a tight left hander with Smith and Stewart also bailing as a result. Mi· chetti was leading with Socco only five seconds back. Smith recovered quickly from the three man 'pile up and started a mad dash through the pack to salvage fourth by the end of the eighth lap. Socco zapped Mic;hetti mid-moto and built a small lead, but Michetti closed the gap late in the race to make for an exating ending. Unfortunately, Michetti's efforts Results OPEN EX: 1. Tom Moen; 2. Holtman LOok a 2-2 second, and Chikusa a 3-3 third. ROSEBURG, OR, JUNE 2 Kawasaki Team Green's Larry Ward topped three Expert class· es at the Clarks Branch NMA qualifying round. Ward took class honors in the lO5cc, 12 plus class as well as the o-83cc 12 pI us Modified and Stock classes, winning each with I-I sWeep50n his Hi-Point! Bell/HRP/Kal-Gard/Team Green machinery. Seattle's Tom Moen took his Yamaha support ride to the winner's circle in the big bore Expen support class and Scott Tyler (Yam Support) took the 250cc Expert. Ward, jeff Daily (Kaw) and Paul Winn (Kaw) led the Mini Experts 12year-old plus division parade. Ward moved away from Daily, then Winn also put a pass on him to nab second. Ward was uncatchable, winning convincingly in the moto. Moto two saw Ward again pull the holeshot and lead the field up the rough hilltop section and through the double-jumplined downhill. Ward put the chaos behind him to take the win oyer Winn. In the 0-83cc Stock Expert moto, Ward and Oren Bray led a Kawasaki parade on the fiTSt lap while Winn, John Sowards and Daily were front runners in the event. Ward was totally dominant while Bray and Winn fought for second. Winn nabbed the spot with Bray, Daily and Sowards in the top five. Ward logged the scratep in the second moLO and went merrily on his way to a clean sweep of the Stock division, while positions changed behind him. Bray caught and passed Winn for a fine second place in the moLO to go 3-2 for second overall ahead of Winn's 2-3. Roseburg Honda's Rodney Keller and Tyler led an amazing pack of riders bauling for top brass and contingencies. Keller was nabbed by Tyler, who moved out once past Keller in the 250cc Expen Modified class. David Froembling (Hon) joined the hunt, but neither himsel£ nor Keller could take the lead from Tyler, who made the long drive from Seaule payoff with a first moto win. Tyler topped moLO two as well, with Keller challenging from behind for a 2-2 day. Seattle's Tom Moen powered 500cc of YZ power to lead the Open Expert combined Modified/Stock class. Wil· Iiam Holtman (Hon) andjeffOlikusa (Hon) rode in a freight train of riders MADERA, CA, JUNE 2 The newly expanded Little Okie facility apparently fit the needs of Honda rider Jon Nelson, who rode to a two-moto win in 250cc Pro competition today. In the initial go-'round, Damon Webb, on a Honda, jumped into the early lead, only to be passed by Nelson. When dropping into second, Webb was instantly pressured by Wesley Furrh. In an effort to pass Webb, Furrh overshot the double jumps and collied with jamie Davis, sending them both for a tumble. Both riders quickly remounted to try and gain the lost ground. Davis pulled off the track, unable to finish, while Furrh rode to a fourth place finish. Webb made a last-ditch attempt for the lead, but was shut off. Nelson powered to the win, followed by Webb and Don Clark. Nelson grabbed the lead in moto two right from the start, and rode on to win. It was nOl, however, an easy ride. Furrh and Webb did not let up on the pressure, until the 10th lap, when Furrh went wide on a turn, losing valuable time. The break allowed Nelson to pull a lillIe breathing room, as he rode on to the checkered flag. Webb finished third for second overall. Results PEE WEE 50: 1. Corena Cox (Vom); 2.
