Costa Mesa sees Christian cook By Scott Daloisio COSTA MESA, CA, JUNE 15 The hottest rider on the southern California circuit, Alan Christian, made it two wins in his last two outings when he 26 pushed the STP/Valvoline/Bell/HiPoint/PBIITsubaki Godden to his third Costa Mesa Scratch main win of the 1984 season. Christian had to establish a lead two times from the start as Dave DeTemple crashed in turn three on the (irst attempt and was too shaken to remount (or the second try. Christian again took the lead on the second try over Buddy Robinson and Mike Faria. Robinson, who looked super earlier in only his third race since fracturing a collarbone, drifted wide in turn one on lap two and almost bit the crash wall, taking him out o( contention. That left Faria as Christian's only challenger and he pulled up to the leader's rear tire and attempted to shoot by on the inside on the (inal lap. Christian blocked that move and the block enabled the "Big Fella" to lead the rest o( the way and take the win by a length over Faria. One o( the young-lions on the circuit, Mike Mazzacane (NKJ/OaJdeyl Parts Plus/Maely Jaw), picked up his (irst Handicap victory o( 1984. Starting on the 20, Mazzacane took the initial lead over Andy Northrup, who was making his first Costa Mesa Division One appearance, and John Foster. Mark Dwyer inherited third when Foster went down and he held that spot for two laps before Robinson passed him. Mazzacane rode a picture-perfect race to hold his lead all the way to the checkered. Robinson finally fought his way past Northrup for second as they took the checkered flag. . Earlier in the season David Hancock (Jaw) proved he did not belong in Third Division by taking two straight mains. This night he proved he didn't belong on the zero in Second Division as he devastated his competition by taking his heat and the main event. Jeff Springman took second with Bob Ott third. Rick VanDerham (Mae) held off a very determined Mike Dwyer to capture his (irst Costa Mesa Third Division main of the season. Third spot went to Bob Tocco. Jessee Finch returned to the Costa Mesa victory lane for the first time since April when he took the Junior main event. Trinnon Cirello, on a cut-down 260 Weslake, took second Paul Orlandi backed up last week's performance in the weekly Thursday night AMA Speedw'!y program at Baylands Raceway Park by capturing the very competitive Scratch main event and the crowd-pleasing match race against Duane Yarrow. While Orlandi was taking the Scratch main, Steve Martin continued an unprecedented streak by taking the Handicap main event, his (ourth in four starts in northern California competition. Martin took off from the 20-yard line and held 0(£ challenges from John Volk and Duane Yarrow to POSt the win. Volk and Yarrow ran side by side right on Martin's rear wheel and at the line the finish was tOO close to call for second place. In a controversial decision the scorers had Volk second while referee Dane Besenetti had Yarrow second. The referee prevailed and Volk was placed in third. In the Scratch feature Orlandi had to hold off a determined Yarrow, Pat Linn, and David Faria to earn the win. • In the$212 match race, Yarrow and Or'landi both landed on the dirt in turn three on the opening round. Orlandi went down (irst wi th Yarrow sliding in and making contact with him as the two lay high in the turn. Both riders shook off the dirt and climbed on board to continue the best of three series. Yarrow took the first three-lapper, with Orlandi taking the Christian tops Moran in IMS all-Scratch meet By Scott Daloisio SAN BERNARDINO, CA, JUNE 13 "I want to be on the front cover," is what Alan "Crazy" Christian shouted to Speedway Magazine publisher Robert Fitzpatrick as he pulled off his helmet after defeating Kelly Moran in a runof( to win the Speedway Magazine Cup at John LaDouceur's Inland Motorcycle Speedway. It was also a big night for STP as their riders finished .in the first five positions. After Brad Oxley opened the show with a convincing win in event one, Moran came on to take an easy win in event two. Event three saw 1982 California State Champion Lance King challenging IMS favorite "Flying Mike" Faria. Faria got a great gate while King had his problems early, but then made a greatride from the back to grab second. Christian closed out the first round with a win over Tom Burba. After a poor outing at Long Beach, Dubb Ferrell put himself into the hunt when he took event five. It was not an easy win for the veteran to hold of( Moran, who was trying every trick in the book to get by. Bobby Schwartz (ought off Mike Faria on lap one of event six and went on to score an easy win after picking up a zero in his first ride. Christian again made it look easy as he captured the win in event seven. King again got a rotten gate in event eight but he came from the back to win by seven lengths over John Sandona and Burba. Gene Woods defeated Oxley in event nine in a close finish. Things had been getting good but event 10 sent the huge crowd into a frenzy. King, Christian and Moran duked it out the entire four laps. When the dust cleared it was King taking the victory over Moran and Christian with all three riders receiving a standing ovation as they returned to the pits. Schwartz made it two in a row in event II while Faria again stood the crowd on its ear by taking a radical outside line to win event 12 over a determined Ferrell. Ferrell and King took events 13 and 14 by light years over their opponents while Moran ran away from Faria to take 15. Christian got his poorest gate
