Roger, Thompson (H-D), Brown best at Winnemucca GP By Wretched Racer WINNEMUCCA, NV, APR. 29 Just off a big District 36 crosscountry win at the Reno OTHG hare scram bles, Yerington Honda's Kevin Brown did it .. .. 42 again at the Sixth-Ever Winnemucca Grand Prix. Brown kept his CR500 just ahead of Ken Ramsey who himself is coming on strong this year in District 36 cross-country racing. After six rough, 22-mile laps (132 miles total), Brown's advantage over Ramsey amounted to about four minutes. The Winnemucca GP has, in the past, been considered a relatively easy, very fast race as cross-country events go, because the BLM had restricted the promoters to existing trails. However, this time the Flying W's Club was able to use much rougher terrain and they gouerious. The smokebomb run was two miles of virgin chesthigh sage brush. There was a long off-camber uphill, capped by a rock garden, that took out half the Novices on the first lap. A day-long drizzle made the pavement section slippery but did keep the dust down. Dense fog persisted all day on top of ''The Mountain." There were lots of injured riders to keep the ambulance and sweepers busy. Although specta tors at crosscountry races don't usually get to see much, one rider gave them a bit of action this time. He came tearing down the monster downhill into the pits, hit a rut and lost it, flying in the parking area. He smashed into a parked 4x4, caving in the door with his helmet. The poor fellow really rang his bell, dinged his bike, and caused who-knows-whatthoughts to enter the mind of the 4x4's owner. Performances to note were that Vet Expert Gary Vanderpool came in fourth overall and Open Novice Rose came in sixth overall. Goober DelCarlo came in second in the combined 125/250 Expert class on a 125. Dave Porter got his second consecutive 250cc Novice cross-country win to earn a "0" plate for the upcoming Virginia City GP. And one hearty soul finished on a 340 Rokon. Last official finisher was Jerry Meadows on his stock '71 B A B-50. Maybe he wasn 'tthe quickest, but he had the biggest grin, and probably the most fun, of anybody there that day. Results OP EX: 1. CRC Tenderfoot Enduro to Sampson By Mike Klinger RED MOUNTAIN, CA, APR. 29 KTM-mounted, Duralubesponsored Scott Sampson topped a six-rider field at this year's Duralube-sponsored California Racing Club Tenderfoot Enduro. Sampson's score of 1.56justdid beat out second overall, second AA rider Mark Wiechmann (Yam). Wiechmann lost the overall by only 13 seconds over one of the best and toughest eRC courses to date. Randy Kemp finished third, trailing Wiechmann by nine seconds, and' Greg Newland and Robb Mesecher rounded out the top five overall. The virtually unbeatable ScOll Jacobsen (Mini A) was the only rider to zero. the enJi.re fi[s.! loop. J.a..co~n. lost 29 seconds over the 32-mi Ie course wilb class rival Mike Chamberlain Jr. (Mini A) hot on his heels for second. Chamberlain's score of 1.70 for second overall was just fast enough to edge out Kathy Herndon (200cc B-W) who scored 1.71. "Free territory, ride the walls." That's what it said on the route sheet for loop one and everyone was puzzled. Just about five miles off the start, the course dropped into a ravine and there were the walls - a one-mile stretch of rollercoaster embankment racing. Loop one was relatively easy which is what the promoters set out to accomplish. The real challenging section was just after the 30-mile marker, moon rocks at 30 mph with tight switchback turns making it difficult for the Beginners and Criders. Jacobsen zeroed the four checkpoint course and four other riders lost only one point; Chamberlain, Herndon,· Billy Huston (Mini A) and Rob Peters (Mini A). Aaron McGraw turned in an excellent ride for first 250cc C under 16, seventh overall. The first Beginner was James Hagen, turning a score of 3.112. The second loop a great race. The very first checkpoint was tricky, just after the 2.9 marker at 3.0 miles exactly_ Many riders did not expect the checkpoint so soon. As the course led into the Spangler Mountains, the riders began to get set for the special test that was denoted 30/36 mph on the route sheet. Four miles into the 30 mph section there was no checkpoint yet, which kept the riders guessing. Then came the 36 mph section which was very demanding. Miles and miles of soft, steep uphills and rUlly, slipperydownhills. To make things worse, the checkpoint to complete the specialtest was on the side of a hill making it very difficult to race into the checkpoint and stop. A well deserved 13-minute reset followed the test and then it was smooth sailing down pipeline road to the final checkpoint. Following Sampson, Wiechmann, Kemp, Newland and Mesecher was the only other rider to lose on Iy one point, Lowell Spiva (Open A Vet). Mervyn Murray (Open A Senior) finally did it. Murray fmally beat the ace, Harry Keast. Murray and Keast put on an outstanding baule in 1983 for the top Senior honors and it looks as if this year could be a repeat. Greg Winkel turned in the best score for a B rider, losing 2.112 and finishing seventh overall. George Hamill topped all of the C riders with a score of 4.222. Garner. 200 B: 1. DennyWalker; 2. Orr BOYD, TX, APR. 28 A record field of over 160 riders showed up to race at Mike Kidd's Hillside Raceway, with a large field of Experts. After 20 heats, plus a large field of threewheelers, the main events finally got underway. In the 80 c short track Scou Williams got his usual holeshot, but was quickly passed by Mike Hale and then by Trace Polson. Hale then went on to stretch out his lead and won easily. The 250cc Junior short track main was won by Willie McCoy as he took the lead on the first lap. Alan Powers took second after working his way through the pack. Local Expert Charlie Orr won the 250cc Senior main. He took the lead from Terry Newman, but the best ride was put on by 16-year-old Dodd Dyson as he fought his way from sixth to third. cou Scherb managed to hold on to second, with Dyson knocking on his back door. On the eve of his 31st birthday, Fred Debrick returned to racing to ride in the Open Junior short track. He got a good start and won the main with plenty of room to spare. National Number 18 Terry Poovey had some stiff competition in (he Open Senior shorl track main. Duane Duvall, Kenny Tolbert, Sammy Sweet and Orr all had a chance to take the lead from Poovey on the first two laps. Poovey quickly realized the cushion was not the place to be, moved down on the pole and maintained first place. Duvall, however, stayed right on his rear wheel and made no mistakes. Duvall is a Junior to watch this year. He is currently one of the top three Juniors in the nation and was the number one Novice in 1983. Tolbert had no competition for his third-place finish at Hillside. Fourteen-year old Willie McCoy showed his stuff in the Open Junior TT as he rode his 600cc Bates Yamaha for the first time. Bobby Shaw had a commanding lead to take the win but veteran Kirk Tyer felt the heat as he edged McCoy by only half a wheel for second place. Results TROPHY: 1.
