Lazenby stars in OT/OTHG Nat'l MX By Bob Alloy ADEL TO, CA, APR. 28-29 Thirty-seven riders from two Old Timers MX Associations competed in the Over The Hill Gang Nationals held at Sun rise Cycle Park. They were led by former James Bond star George Lazenby, who won the Masters class. Each class ran four motos, two 30minute races on Saturday 'and two 20-minute contests on Sunday. The Masters class began on Satur~ay with Rick Sieman leading the first lap and Lazenby the remaining II. Bob Miller and Dennis Rosenberg also overtook Sieman LO finish 2-3. Miller led the first four lap of the second moLO, but then Lazenby found a way by and rode to another vicLOry, followed by Marvin Olson and Miller. Sunday's first maLO also fell LO Lazenby, who topped Miller and Sieman. Lazenby was foiled in his at· tempt to sweep the class when his s~ock blew while he was leading the fmal moto and he dropped to third behind Sieman and Miller. Overall it was Lazenby, Miller and Sieman. The Junior Masters class was very consistent on Saturday with Bob Beasl~y~ B?b DeMiranda and Ron Way fmlshmg 1-2-3 both times. . Beasley also gave it a shot at sweepmg the class by winning the first mow on Sunday over DeMiranda and George Spearing_ However, like Lazenby, he wa SLOpped in the final moLO whe,:! DeMiranda led all 10 laps for the Will over Beasley. Spearing was third in the moLO and overall. There was a sweep in the Expert class, where Bob Crandall won all four moLOS for the overall win. A third and a second on the final day moved Kurt Sofka up to second over· all. Novice winner Pete Klassen also won his first three events before losing the final event to Wendell Park, who had led in two previous events before running into problems. Bob Alloy strung together three runner· up finishes and edged out Park for second overall. Results MASTERS: 1. George Lazenby: 2. Bob Miller; 3. Rick Sieman. JR MASTERS: 1. Bob Beasley: 2. Cannons roar at Corona FT tripleheader By Elaine Jones CORONA, CA, APR. 29 Corona's first triple header of 1984 season sported good turnout of Pros along with sportsmen to participate in a day of racing that held a few surprises. The first Mon 'y class of the day was the 250cc short track. Out on LOp went Ross Klatt followed by Eddie San Roman and Calvin Rayborn Jr. On the third lap, Curtis Cannon worked his way to second and was challenging Klatt for the lead. Klatt held his ground and kept the door shut on a frustrated Cannon until they came out of turn four and headed into the white nag lap. Cannon found the daylight he was looking for and came down low for the lead. econd wa Klatt with San Roman holding on LO third. . [n the Open Money short track it was again Klatt who broke on LOp but this time Roger Thompson LOok over on lap two and never looked back. Jeff John on, who had gotten of[ in fourth, LOok advantage of Ross Thompson's mechanical problem to take over th ird. Klan, who had already been a bridesmaid twice, was not to be denied when it came to Open Money TT. He came up with another one of his great starts and never looked back as he stayed well ahead of the field. -Jeff Johnson, Honda-mounted like Klatt, • could do no more than follow him home as did Chris Cannon, Roger Thompson, Curtis Cannon, Ross Thompson and Craig Williams. The most entertaining part of this race was watching Curtis Cannon trying to manhandle or be manhandled by a KTM set up strictly for motocross and much too far off the ground for the likes of Curtis. The 250cc Money half mile will be well remembered by one rider because it was his first day as a money racer and he came up with the win. It was Calvin Rayborn who got the jump on the field followed by MaLL Stoutenburg and Rusty Gaita. Gaita moved LO second by the third lap but Rayborn was not about to give him anything more. It came down to the final lap when both of them hit turn three side by side and came out of four like a pair of twins. In the drag race to the finish line it was Gaita by a narrow margin for his first money win and a more happy pit crew and friends would be hard put to find anywhere. The event everyone had been waiting LO see was the Open Money half mile and a field of 10 rolled to the line by their order of finish in the heaL. So far no one had been able to score a double win and the three that could do it were on hand in the presence of Roger Thompson, Klatt and Curtis Cannon. Joining them were Jeff Johnson, Chris Cannon, Rob Hassay, Ross Thompson, Craig Williams, Ron Slleets and Calvin Rayborn. Again it was LO'be a day shared by many, not a few. Chris Cannon came off the line like he had been programmed and proceeded to run away from the field. Johnson, who had locked into second, had to keep one eye over his shoulder as Klatt, Curti Cannon and Roger Thompson fought it out for third. Klan held it for the first three laps before Thompson got by both Klatt and Cannon. Thompson then puta move on Johnson one lap later, but Johnson knows his old friend well and came right back and got his spot back. After that he gave no ground and they settled [or second and third.
