The now-prepared Apodaca held off repeated attempts for the lead, and the pair flew by the checkers with Chris about a foot ahead. All the action in the I25cc Junior class was supplied by the YZ of John Lewis. Lewis led the second half of the staggered-start moLOS twice, and in the first one, caught all but the leader of the first gate. A distant second went to Kawasaki's Edd Silee. Junior 250cc rider Steve Scannell took the lead from Danny Villanella's Honda in the third lap of moLO one, and held it LO the checkers. Scannell holeshOl the second moto, but lost the lead to Uoyd Feldbauer's RM in the second lap. Scannell finished second, but still earned first overall. The sparse group of Pros all raced together. Robbie Nolin, aboard his practice YZ250, led both moLOS f1agto-flag, way ahead of second place. Gary Harris' 500cR represented second in the first moLO, and l25YZ pilot Todd Hoover did so in the second. 0(") 00 0') ..... Results Heavy-duty first-turn action at Carlsbad motocross. Fernandez survives the heat at CRC BanditoGP By Terry Rezek ORANGE, CA, SEPT. II Dave Fernandez took the Pro holeshot at California Racing Club's Bandito GP and put his Open Yamaha into an early lead. A little too early, perhaps, because David Hopwood passed him before the first lap was over and held the lead all the way to the win. Darin Craig ran third until lap three when he took second from Fernandez and held that spot until a lap and a half from the end. Too much power to the ground on an uphill left Craig temporarily in the dust and Fernandez retook second to stay. Dan De Young led the 125s from the drop of the flag to the finish for the win in that class. In the Vets and Seniors' race, Dan Ayers and W.J. Bradbury swapped the lead a few times until Ayers DNF and Bradbury went on for the win. Iron man of the day award goes LO Supercross promoter Mike Goodwin who rode the entire race with his broken wrist wrapped in several pounds of cast and foam padding held.at shoulder height! The most hectic start of the day was in the 250cc event. Glen Wells survived the melee best, by moving into the lead before the race was a 10th of a lap old. He stayed right there for the Intermediate win. By lap three, Everret Neal established himself as Novice leader and ran away from the other Novices LO finish fourth overall and win his class. Apodaca wins battle, loses war at Carlsbad By Ken Stein CARLSBAD, CA, SEPT. II Honda rider Chris Apodaca and Suzuki-mounted Burnell Lurcock supplied the best racing of the day in Continental Motorsp0rl Club's 125cc Intermediate class at Carlsbad today. Lurcook started the first moto in third place, behind Mark King's Honda and leader Apodaca. Lurcock rode wild, desperately trying to gain ground on the leaders. On the sixth lap, LurcOQk 'tunted King into the weeds, and began working on Apodaca. At the end of the eighth lap, he and Apodaca tangled, and they both hit the dirt. Lurcook was up in a flash, jumped back on his stili-running bike, and took over the lead. Kawasaki rider Randy Carter, who came up from dead last; and early victim King;new by before Apodaca got restarted. Lurcook breezed in unchallenged for the win, with King and Apodaca vowing revenge. . It didn't look like either would have a chance at the start of the second molO. Exiting the first turn, Apodaca had a commanding lead; while Lurcook stumbled around in fifth, two places ahead of King. King never got close enough for revenge as Lurcook moved into second on the second lap. Lurcook closed the gap OPEN PRO: 1. Gary Harris (Hus). 250 PRO: 1. Robert Nolin (Vam): 2. Hansen leads the way to victory at Cycleland By David James CHlNO, CA, SEPT. 10 The 14 Experts were out in force Saturday night at Cycleland Speedway for the Butte County Cycle Dealers $300 purse to first place. The star of the night was Sacramento's Dale Hansen. Hansen put his John Mason/American Honda across the line for the 250cc Expert main event. He got the position off the line and into the first turn, but Oroville's Mike Gresham was on a tow with Hansen. On lap three, both riders began pulling away from the rest of the field. Hansen was rid:ing with style while Gresham was hoping for some breathing room. However, Chico's Dirk Sauer was the' big surprise coming from the back of the pack to a third position' in less than five laps. On lap five, Hansen started getting some awesome drives out of turns two and four while leaving Gresham for Sauer. During lap six, two riders crashed coming outoftum two. Fortunately, both riders walked away from the accident. The restart resulted in a single-line formation with Hansen. Gresham and Sauer. The trio raced into the first turn while the rest of the field were fighting for a position before the first turn. Suddenly, Gresham got aggressive by clipping Hansen's Honda, but Dale managed LO keep the. gas on and save his lead. Meanwhile, Sauer passed Gresham along the back straight on the first lap. Slowly, Sauer moved up to the front runner Hansen, who never opened the door for Dirk. It was an outstanding performance and a welldeserved win for the di\:mQ.um.ed. Hansen~ -- -- - They call him Mike "Marble" Fudge from Sacramento. Fudge got the holeshot in the 250cc Junior main event with Vance Felicio breathing down his back. The two Juniors had a cornmanding lead with Felicio continuing LO pressure Fudge the entire eight laps. However, Fudge was the first to the checkered flag. Dave Kerr put in an outstanding pttformance as he walked away with the 250cc Novice main event. Kerr had problems on the starting line leaving him in third place in turn one, but this didn't stop the Chico rider. He stayed up in the high groove going into tum one. While coming out of two, Kerr got an incredible drive on his Yamaha to give him the lead. Joey Bolen was close behind for two laps until Kerr started pouring it on. He led the emire eight laps for the victory. Williamson welcomes win at CoronaMX By S.E.
