Light EUGENE, OR, JAN. 30 Kawasaki-supported Joe Spangler continued a roll in th e Willamette Valley by taking the 125cc Pro class at the Emerald Racing Association 's motocross in Eugene. Spangler turned in a 1-2 score to nab th e overall with KTM 's Rodney Keller on the A-I Cycle/MoteX Fox machine taking a perfect I-I tally to top th e Open Pro class on a muddy Superbowl Sunday. , Opening race in the slick da y of racing was the Pee Wee clas s, which ran the small co urse. Miller Products/ Hi-Point/Kawasaki-sponsored J eff Dail y too k h is usual posit ion (the lead ) a t the drop of the ga te, lead ing Yamaha rider Chris 'Jackson and yo ung J ason Farl ey. Daily used hi s mud riding expe rience 10 nab th e moto wi n over J ackson. Mot o two was a Dail y domina tion with th e T eam Green rid er to tall y des troying every waterh ole in sigh t; also bein g careful not to be sucked up by o ne of th e ma ny " lakes" that surround th e 2.0 m ile course, wh ich a re not ac tua lly lakes but drain-offs from a ro und th e track . Dail y's I-I score took th e overall win over J ackson a nd Farl ey. Matt Ramey (Herb's Cycle/Yam) went 1-2 in the Mini Int erm ediate cla ss, a class dominated by Dail y all seaso n long. Ed Portz (Suz) tallied a 3-1, winning th e second moto in a shootout between himself, Ramey and Daily. Daily held close enough to Ramey for second in rnoto while Portz had his share of troubles, bailing off in the soup. Portz capitalized on a "clean" holeshot and led the second moto with relative ease over -26 Ramey a nd Daily, who trailed in an unusual third positi on . Portz too k the win over Ramey an Daily. Ramey's 1-2 was good for the overall with Portz second over Dail y. Best race of the showery da y came in the form of a Open Pro/I 25cc Pro co mbined event wh ich saw th e big bor es runnig staggered ah ead of th e smaller 125s. Keller coll ected the holeshot and dug a trench int o turn one followed closely by Ben Grable (Hus), who also used hi s 500cc machine as a ditch digger and had no problem s circulating the muddy hillside course. Kell er wicked th e throttle o n the new '83 KTM wh ile coun ting, th e dollars he could collect. In th e 125ccportion, Spangler put his Kawasaki/Moto-X Fox/Light Racing Products-sponsored rid e into a superb lead over Loch Names (Suz) and La rry Brumwell (Kaw). Spangler had an easy win over Nam es, who stayed wi th in shooting range bu t was relegated to runnersup po sit ion. Brumwell was third. Kell er a nd Grabl e stayed 1-2 in the Open ranks. . National Sideca r winner s Pete Essaff and Dennis Crueger became th e first to join th e eli te, despite th e three year sti nt back in th e '70s by La rry Col eman a nd Wall y Andrews. WinslOn Pro Series champ Rick Graham was getting Houston-primed and had h is dad Bill accep t in h is place wh ile Dick Ma nn stood in for Darrell Shultz, the 500cc Na tio na l MX Cha m p. A sta nding ova tio n was ready for Brad La ckey's awa rd winn in g effo rts. Smokey J oe was one of the few to successfully transfer from a National cha mp ionship level in two wheel competition and won the USAC Indy car title twice before injuries forced '~', his retirement, ducts Golden State Ama teur Series at Sand Hill Ranch . Because of th e wea ther, a ll classes ra n o ne rnoto, Bob Major and hi s Concord Yamaha took th e first di vision of 125cc Juniors in a muck and mire event that saw lots of changes in the overall point standings. J im Wordell and Dal e Himmelreich were 2-3. Scores in the second division got changed wh en on e rid er was di squalified for a class infraction a nd it was Brad Toms with th e points over Mik e Gilmartin, who still ha s th e most series points, a nd Randy Mano th ird over Malcom Abbott a nd J im Perry . T yson Voh land had a tough tim e with th e deepest mudhol e a nd too k a 12th, dropping off the poin ts lead. The o ther di vision went to Danny Storbeck o u t of T exas a nd he becam e th e poin ts lead er. Mike Roberts took second over WashinglOn's Denny Dolquist a nd Nevada 's Doug R ichards. Lo vely Mercedes Gonzales took a good fifth . J ami e Da vi s a n d hi s CR250R Honda got h is first series win in the 250cc Junior division one with Jerry Evans in for seco nd over Wes Harriger. John Malcolm earn ed more good points, tak ing the second division over Duane Quale and Dave Moore, who leads 'em all in th e totals. Larry Lawrence has been perfect since joining the series at Lake Madera, winning both mores of the 250cc Intermediate first division with Tom Dunn from Colorado taking second in front of Dean Welsh . Curt Jaimet won the second division and continues to lead the way , coming all the way from Indy to join th e lovely California weather. Mike Guasch took hi s Suzuki to second a nd more good points while Frank Valadao held close with a third for th e da y over Claus Holm a nd Ed Abella. Open Junior rid ers wound up getting two divis ions for th e scoring a nd it was Cal vin Bakis th e first division winner over Mike Garcia. Ken Eggers ' won the other division over Scott Yenzer a nd Kurt Schi££ner. Rich Boe a nd h is Husky still lea d th e Open Intermediat e series despi te a bad tim e when th e bik e wouldn't start at the lin e.
