Box 2043 Grand Junction , CO 81501 Nolin drowns comp at soggy Carlsbad MX By Kenneth B. Stein If bikers are banned from public land. who will be next? Hikers? Horsemen? Everybody? CARLSBAD , CA, JAN. I On a rain-soak ed , crashplagued Carlsbad track, Robbie Nolin led both motos of the 250ccPro class from flag to flag . After a week of liquid sunshine th e track was surprisingly civil a t th e sta rt of th e race, due to exem p lary effort by the ground crew. Still, th e mud took its toll. At th e start of Nolin' s first heat , part of th e gate failed to drop because of th e mud, a nd many riders were rudely di smounted while traversing th e course throughout th e da y. One injury was sustained. The threat ening clouds a nd ea rlier inclement weather kept crowds and riders to a minimum. Of the 86 rid ers that braved th e eleme n ts, a full 25 were Pros, which says something a bo u t th e determination required to be a Pro. At th edropofthegateon its second a ttem p t, Nolin took the holeshot and ran away from the pack. No overtime for Robbie - he fini shed his shift 30 seconds before second placed Eric Baker. The second moto was much more of a contest. Agai n No lin grabbed the lead immediately, but Ba ker, who started fourth , got around Davids Hopwood and Hammond in the ear ly laps and spent th e duration of th e race with in sp itting distance from Nolin's rear fender. At th e final nag it was Noli n -Bak er-Hopwood Hammond. . In the 125cc Pro class, Todd Hoover took tum one by storm a nd spent the rest of th e first moto pl acing real estate between himself and th e rest of the pack. Things got tighter during th e second heat. H oover sq ueezed by Bobby Urhel o n th e third lap, and they both passed Roger Ha yes for th e 1,2 positions o n lap six. Urhel stayed close to H oo ver until th e end, but no more pa ssin g occured and th ey finished in th e same order as in th e first heat. The Open Pro class gave the fans plenty of excitement. Both motos saw the lead cha nge four times, a nd second place cha nged eigh t a nd seven tim es, respectively. Matt T edder took honors for the day , his 2-1 finish es besting Dale And erson 's \·3 com bo. In other race action , Vic Wa lker twice too k th e lead o n the second lap for wins in the 250cc Int erm edia tes, and Ra nd y R ush 's 2·\ fini shes were good eno ugh for a win in the 125cc Int ermediates. The 125ccJunior race, marred by an injury to Thomas Piccot , was won by Ro n Whitlow. Piccot was in good spirits a nd capable ha nds on leaving. Here's hoping fora speedy recovery.
