T wo of T exas' finest ra cers had success fu l o uti ngs in the sa nd as ' David Stutts a nd Danny Storbeck took unch allen ged wins, with Stor beck doing double d uty . In sma ll bore ac tion it was Cod y Marek victoriou s in th e Mini Junior class wi th brother Stacy topping both the Mini Seniors a nd the I05cc class . The Rosen berg Kawasaki riders swept to six rnoto wins with Derek Hanson (Yarri) giving Cody a race a nd Brent Freed (Kaw) keepi ng Stacy honest. Vince R izzo (Kaw), improving with each contest, ra n a stro ng th ird in th e Mini Sen iors. No bod y ma kes it look easi er than yo ung Dann y Storbeck. H e pu t in a lmost fla wless performances while capturi ng first place in bo th th e 125 a nd 250cc Intermediate d ivisions o n hi s 125. Storbeck has served no tice th a t it will not be long before he turns Pro, he co u ld probab ly do so now if he chose. Aboard a 125 Yamaha, St or beck rode in the 250cc Expert class just for the exercise. After lead ing the first lap,.he pulled off the track to let everyo ne by, a nd even tho ugh the victim of a ra re fall on th e sixt h lap, still managed to finish thi rd. In the second mo to our boy Da nny just mo tored awa y fro m all concern ed and left David Stutts (Ya m) an d Russell Rogers (Yam ) to wrestle over th e gree n bac ks. Rogers gave a fine account ing of himself in the ini tial heat, a nd many of those' asse m bled voiced o p timism o ver h is chances in the second enco unter. Stutts, however, had ot he r ideas, a nd h is margin of victory in th e second ro und was even greater. Kevin Horton (Suz) rode smooth ly a nd stead ily to cop th ird over Lee Du bose, wh o was o bviously hav ing teeth in g problems with h is new Kawasaki. Stutts bests Ellis in Austin shootout If your dealer doesn't handle By Joe Milian AUSTIN, TX, JAN. 23 Rumors that Austin would be without a motocross track for the first time -in over 12 years were laid to rest tod ay as Lee Bigga rt opened Capitol City Mo tocross Racewa y. Even th o ugh th is ini tial effort was run with on ly a week's notice, o ver 150 riders showed up to compete. T rack officia ls an nounced th at the' new facil it y, underwritten in part by Kasson Yama ha of Austin, will host meetings o n the first , th ird, a nd fifth Sundays of each month, beginning in February . It will run a straig h t program of racin g with practice beginning promptly a t II a.rn., with th e fir st bikes off th e line a t noon. This wi ll all ow the Dallas a nd Houston area riders a little ext ra time to ge t th ere. Preparations for nigh t racing a re underway with a ten tative open ing date in May. The O pen In termedia te contingent roared over th e ga te and down th e straigh ta way into th e fir st turn. San Anto n io's " Flying Zettner Brothers," Brian and Steve, led in th e early laps, bu t th e thumper pilots were forced to yield to a determ ined Bryan Briggs. Briggs, on a Kasson Racing Team YZ490, was th e man to ca tch af ter the th ird lap. Carter Bruce joined th e Zet tn ers, but th eir pursu it proved fu tile. The seco nd moto witnessed Briggs surging from behi nd to clai m the top spot once more to ga in overall honors. Rapid Ronnie Prado of Au stin, a lso a board a Yamaha, showed th e assem bled throng a fistful of throttle a nd determi nation in a second mo to co nfro ntation with David Schlittler. Coming from back in the pack , Prado ca ug h t th e Seal y Kawasa ki pil ot a t the white flag a nd stuffed ins ide th e g reen machine with a scant hundred yards rem aining and held on to claim fir st overa ll in the highly compe titi ve 125cc In termediate class. In the ever popula r O ver 30 class, th e irres pressi ble Smokey J oe bested arch riva ls Bill Kasson and Lester Munson on ly to learn that the first p lace lovin g cu p had been m ispl aced. Smokey is reportedly hold in g Lee Biggarr's eldest so n hostage until he gets h is tro phy. Da ve Stutts went back to Schertz, wit h the winner's share of the Expert loot but not before Big Tex Yamaha sponsored rider J eff Ell is made a concerted bid for the money him self.
