Westernhotline C(") 00 0") Ty.on Vohl.nd topped the GSS 126cc Intermedi.te cl•••. Mini stars dominate GSS classes By Tom Corley ORANGE, CA, JAN. 8 The opening round of the Con- . tinental Motosports Club's Preston Petty/Pro-Am Trailers Golden State Series attracted ' 24 over 1200 riders to Saddleback Park. the largest turnout ever for a CMCsanctioned motocross. The amateurs battled on two tracks Saturday, with the exception of the Veterans and the Mini Experts who starred with the nation's finest professionals on Sunday. The enormity of this event was shown by a line-up that included four divisions of 125cc Juniors and 250cc Intermediate riders. One of the finest two-man battles was seen in 125ccJuniordivision three contest, It came close to Sunday's Magoo versus Glover match! Similar to that Pro match, the Honda pilot came through with the top honors as Mike Gilmartin defeated WFO /HPS rider John Davis on a Suzuki. On the line were 26 riders of the I 25cc Junior division three event. It became an instant two-man battle with Davis leading the race till Gilmartin slid on by on a rough straight before the finish area. Running in third place was Richard Sazama while Jeff Eary secured .Iourrhafter fighting his way through the pack. In an attempt to win the contest overall, Davis took the lead in the final moto, Gilmartin passed Davis, but on another lap Davis regained the lead around the finish line. As the race came to the last lap, Gilmartin had the lead with Davis dropping behind, but still holding second place well ahead of John Fiehler. On the trophy list it was Gilmartin, Davis and Jeff Eary. Close to 100 riders were divided between three divisions of 125ccIntermediates. The division one class was filled with potential Pro riders. Speedy SoCaI lady racer Mercedes Gonzalez (Yam ) got the jump in the first moto leading Kurt Henricksen (Yam ), a consistent top runner at this track. On the second lap Henricksen shot by Gonzalez as they charged up Webco Hill. While Henricksen stretched out his lead, a battle for second place was going on between Gonzalez and Scou Keyes. Soon Keyes took over second with Gonzalez dropping back to fifth . Both Keyes and Mercedes had bad scores in the final moto whereas Henricksen was on top from start to finish. Henricksen was followed by Kawasaki aces Jason Rincon and Danny Cantley. Both did well in the final moto, but took poor scores in the opening moto. Henricksen took the top trophy over Mike Roberts and Dean Welsh. Tyson Vohland won both rnotos in the division two contest and defeated Lance Johnson. Former Mini star, destined to be a top 125cc Pro, Danny Storbeck froin San Antonio, TX dazzled the division three riders and swept both rounds. Jim Cobham took his Suzuki to the first moto win in the 250cc Intermediate division one contest over Joe Melton and Gary Renko. Unfortunately, Cobham took a 10th place in the final as a pile-up on the second tum slowed down the many others. Mid-Cities Honda rider Roger Hayes had the lead till Jeff Clark worked by and Hayes dropped to second. Paul Bassett was moving along just fine in third till Bill Scott flew by over a jump. Clark's 4-1 tally earned him the overall win ahead of Hayes and Buzz Ioppolo. . No single rider dominated the 250cc Intermediate division two event. Luc Deley took his Suzuki out front in the lead moto over Ron McCoy and Mark Adamson. Adamson cruised ahead of Whinier Honda's Pat Delligaua in the final moto, Some good action was going on behind the leaders as Robbie James tried to pass Dean Welsh on the finish corner, but sideswiped him. They both hit the ground. James still ended up with fifth place. A 3-1 tally earned Adamson the top trophy over Delligatta and Deley. Randy Owen 's hard luck story is changing as Randy took an important Golden State Series win by sweeping both motos of the 250cc Intermediate division four class. The final race was most exciting as Owen was in first being followed by Kawasaki riders Ken Campbell and Vet Expert Alan Olson. The turning point for the second place position changed as Campbell stumbled around a corner and Olson took a better line and second place. Campbell dropped back to fourth place as Mike Bosworth claimed third. Owen won it overall ahead of Olson and Bosworth. Cycle Guide editor Ron Lawson was out to win the 500cc Intermediate division one class, but faded back in both motos. " I had too much pumpkin pie over the holidays!" explained Lawson. Jeff Longand Lawson diced it out in the first moto till Lawson dropped back. Lawson crashed at the finish which topped off his moto. DF Cycle rider Dave Fernandez moved up to second place with Richard Boe in third while Jeff Long had the win. The second moto was disastrous for Long as he DNF. Lawson tired out, but still placed fourth. Fernandez became the leader as soon as he worked by a couple of riders, and he led Boeand Linskens to the checkered. Fernandez's 2-1 tally won him first place over Boe and Lawson. Results 60JR 9-11 : 1. Eric Alstrin (Kaw) ; 2. ToddO'Raar (Kaw); 3 . Jeannie Pruitt (Yam). 60 JR THRU 8: 1. Jessa James (Vam); 2. Canoy cleans up eRC Minis at "Sad" By Lee Taylor ORANGE, CA, DEC. 12 The California Racing Club's Saddleback action was intense as always with the Minis running rampant throughout the day. For starters, take Pj ls Craig Canoy. His Suzukis sizzled throughout both the 80cc Stock and Modified Expert races. Not only did Canoy turn in superb back-so-back performances, but he managed to fend off Ramon Dominguez for the 80cc Stock win , then came back to a repeat duel with Dominguez in the Modified contest, once more holding him to second. The CRC Vets, as usual, were congenial in the pits, but animals out of the gate. The Intermediates waged a battle between Ken Kulluson, Jody Weisel and Gary Richter. Kulluson piloted his Suzuki out ahead for control of the first rnoto only to find "MX Action" . ce, Weia sel, riding shotgun. Both men fought to hold Wheelsmith's Richter to third. By moto's end, Kulluson led the way with Weisel hanging onto second and Richter settling for third. The second moto found Kulluson in command with Weisel breathing down his jersey. When Richter's Maico gave up the ghost, Weisel set out to snag Kulluson. When the checkers waved them back to the pits and a cold beer, Kulluson had a double moto victory, holding Weisel to second.
