Barnes, Hettinga, Swendson dominate Sand LakeGP By Brian Barnes SAND LAKE, O R, JAN. 16 A perfect day of racing greeted the 154 entrants who participated in this year's eighth annual Sand Lake Grand Prix, sponsored by Oregon's Trailfinder's Motorcycle Club. The Oregon coast has not always had th e greatest weather for th e rac e, but the conditions for todav's event were mild and warm with no rain the entire day. Bruce Barn es (St. John's Hon-Srnall Engin e Specialties), Dave Heu inga (Yam) and Alden Swendson (Swendson Concrete/Han) came out the big winners in the 125, 250cc and Open classes. respectively. All th ree riders had put miles of distance between themselves and the competition before taking the checkered flag. Ed Berray (CZ) took a great hole- ;,~a! ,kt A~e.: 9~~·· T ~e,~ ~c'a,s~, . ~ow- Wargo plays spoiler at final Hangtown Qualifier The first 250cc Expert moto was holeshot by Honda-mounted Ken MeKenzie•. w ho was pursued by Tom McKenzi e (Kaw), Wargo (Hon) and Barney Wilson (Suz), Wargo made quick work of Ka wasa ki-sponsored Tom McKenzie as he passed him in th e back section and went after the leader. As Wargo reeled in Ken McKenzi e, Ri ch Mu ther (Ma i) was p icking off riders every lap, desperat el y making up for his poor start. Wargo finished an unchallenged first a h ead of Tom and Ken McKenzie. Muther sn agged a well ea rn ed fourth with Wilson close behind. Wargo wasted little time in powering to a sizeable lead as h e holeshot th e seco n d moto. Tom McKenzie, Brad Emery (Suz ) a nd Muther battled for second o n the ex trem ely rutted track. Wargo was flawless as he carved his Honda to a 30-second lead a t th e fini sh . The trio of Em ery , Tom MeKenzie and Muther resulted in a spill by McKenzi e. Ken McKenzie (H on) took advantage of the sma ll pile-up to zap both Emery and Muther to finish a h o tly contested second. Emery slid his Suzuki in front of Muther as they finished third and fourth , respectively. Cabral br iefl y d iced with Wi lso n before taki ng the nod at the finish line and finishing up the top five. Gary Bonds (H us), Chuck Hodson (Yam ), a nd Larry Sause ( Hon) were up front for th e entire race, but wh en Bonds en co un ter ed problems on lap six, Hodson cru ised for th e win with Sause second a nd Bon ds third. Hearns again pulled the h olesho t in moto two , but Wargo started closer (sixth) and was a ble to catch and pass Hearns on lap six.
