Hooper rules again
in Roseburg MX
By Clay and Suanne Light
ROSEBURG , O R , JAN. 16
Larry Hooper put his O ' Neall
Rosebu rg Yamaha H onda on
top of the P ro heap once again .
at Clarks Branch Raceway in
Rosebu rg today . The Medford speedster aced both Op en Pro outings and
captured the 250cc Pro laurels as
well. R ick Bau lt (Roseburg Suzuki)
took a I-I score to the 125cc Pro pay
window.
T he first race of the day was a 17
rider I 25cc Junior/Intermediate co mbined moto. Rosebu rg's Steve Nelson
h as come on stro ng as of la te and put
h is R oseb urg Yamaha H onda into a
commanding lea d, controlli ng the
tempo a nd setting a blisterin g pace
that took h im a ll th e way to th e
checkered flag over H onda-m ounted
Mike Harwood an d Mi ke Booth (Suz).
T he J u nior wi n went to Wayne Beattie (Kaw), who out paced Seth Malkon (Hon) and Tony Guido (Yam) .
Mo to two had Harwood ho und th e
pack to reap the harvest a nd ta ke th e
rno to win and the overall, which put
Nelson in the runner-up position.
Daryl Hawkins (S u z) was third overall with a 4-3 tall y and Bea tt ie captured the Junior rnoto victory again
beating Malkon (2-2) and Damon
Schaefer (Kaw) (4-3).
Another exceptionally fine race was
all the 250s in one large pack. Hooper
put h is 250cc Pro Link into the lead
at the drop of th e ga te and dazzl ed the
spectators with an impressive display
o f· ariel tactics while outdistancing
the Intermediates as well . Wes Roberts
put his Honda acro ss the finish line
to take the Intermediate win with
second to R ick Huffman (Ya m H on
of Rosebu rg ) and Steve Hunt (Suz)
third. Kevin Seevers (Suz) p ushed
from behind to take the Junior class
wm.
The second verse was same as th e
first in Hooper's case, the H oop led
this moto a nd again destroyed th e
loa m y terrain-Huffman took over in
seco nd as top Int erm ediate to take th e
overall (2- I ) ahead of Rob erts (1-2).
Wes Boden n er (Suz ) took the Jun ior
win, posting a 3·\ tally which came
up short when the overalls were
posted . Seevers took the overall with
a 1-2.
.
All 125cclOpen Pro s ran combined
in both motos. Hooper hauled in th e
loot in both of the O pe nou tin gs for a
chunk of Ral p h Huffman 's 200%payback over Jim Jones on a KTM . J on es
a nd Hooper argued briefl y until
Hooper put the ham mer down and
left the fig hting to Jones and a p ack
o f 125s led by Ba u lt and veteran R ick
Smith (Ya m Hon of R oseburg ).
Sm ith has dominated the Roseburg
area for over h a lf a deca de, bu t di dn ' t
today as Bault led bo th outings and
ca rded a perfect I-l over Sm ith 's 2-2.
