McCormick on target at Albany Supercross By Brian Barnes ALBANY , OR, JAN. 9 Fred's Cycle City Suzuki pilot Mike McCormick was the big winner a t race number two of the Albany Supercross Series r Eric Hall (9) and Mike McCormick (492) lead the 125cc Pros in Albany. . K£mo Ca sey of Walnut Creek Honda pulled a holeshot in the I 25cc Expert class and was pass ed by Mark Hearns a nd J immy Olson as he slid off the track on th e grassy off-camber. Olson soon jetted by Hearns to lead a runaway . race. Craig Christain 'maneuvered his Yamaha from seventh to a third place finish. . Hearns. Randy Chapman, and Ron Tiago headed the first lap of moto two as Kimo worked past Tiago and Chapman to hold second througho u t. Mike Reimer's new powerful Honda helped him hang onto third, just in front o f Tiago. Wa yne Arch er of Berkeley Yam aha , a n d w in ne r o f moto one, holeshot th e second Open Expert ra ce with Jon Nauman of Walnut Creek Honda coming quickl y from third to second. Jon only needed three laps to pass Archer for th e lead, but a slight bobbIe gave th e lead back to Archer. Jon remounted and was close to the takeover point when he apparently ran o u t of gas on the uphill. A qui ck refill from a spectator and Jon only lost one position - holding third overa ll. . H ea vy rains in th e area kept ri der attendance down a litt le and only six 125cc class ride rs gated for the first m oto . Hofenbredl was aga in third, but not until aft er a long duel with Fa st , who enco u ntered problems a nd fini shed fourth. Manning and La rson were th e lone 250cc class riders an d Manning took advan tage o f both h ol esh ot s for h is second swee p of motos toda y. Mike Kiem ele (Suz)scored two more wins this weekend in th e I 25cc Intermediate battle, but this time he was forced to move th rough th e pa ck to do it. Ri chie Lee (Ya m), Ben Wilti ams (Hon ) and Gl enn Hunter (Gresham Suz) led the start with Hunter moving his Suzuki into th e lead after four laps . Kiem ele soon moved by to take th e win , however ; Hunter was second and Bruce Barnes (St. Johns Honda ) finished th ird. Kiemele and Bill Burnham (Su z) led start of moto two a nd by the end of th e first lap th e race became a five wav battle to th e finish . Kiemel e stayed ou t front for th e win with Burnham holding off th e new CR of Barnes, who took anothe r third. Hunter finished fourth and Kawasakimounted Mark Sanders was fifth . The 250cc and Open classes fou nd only two entrants in each class, so all th e Pros ran together. Ro bby Watilo (R .W. Racing, Yamaha of Salem) aced both wins over Mike Ro bin son (Yam ) in the 250ccclass, while H erb's Cycle Honda-mounted Steve Williams piloted his new CR480around G & G Husky rider Ben Grable for th e Open honors. In 125cc action McCormick had his Suzuki out front at the start and held a good lead over Eric Hall (H o nda Support/Eric L inde), Denny Fennel (Yam a ha supportlMX Fo x! Yamhill Yam ), Clarence Gardner (Cycle Country/Hon ) and Yamahamounted Grayson Hart. McCormick held onto th e lead unti l Hall began a ch arge with three laps to go. Hall slo wly reeled in the Suzuki and a h ard drive out of the final co rn er put h im in the lead with just one lap to go . H all held on for th e win. McCo rm ick wa s a cl ose second and Fen nel fin ished third. McCormick grabbed a no ther hole-, shot to lead th e sta rt o f rn oto tw o and wa s chased by Fennel a nd H all for th e entire m oto . McCorm ick pulled eno ug h of a lead to stay in front for the ove ra ll. Meanwhile, Fennel and H all were locked in a n intense duel for the second spo t and as he had d on e to McCormick th e previous moto, Hall go t by Fennel to take second. The 125cc Amateur Classes were treated to free entry today, co u rtesy of Bob Leach the promoter. Both the Intermediate and Juniors thri lled th e large turnout of spectators with some great cra sh -and -burn racing. In the fir st divis ion of the 125cc Juniors, Herb Gelow (Hon ) and Da n Summerlin (Suz ) traded wins and runner-ups in eac h moto, Gelow got the overall by virtue of hi s second moto win. Another Suzuki rider, Jay Ov erfield was third. In division two, Yamaha rider Dave Fox scored both wins. Lelch Hooper rules again in Roseburg MX By Clay and Suanne Light ROSEBURG , O R , JAN. 16 Larry Hooper put his O ' Neall Rosebu rg Yamaha H onda on top of the P ro heap once again . at Clarks Branch Raceway in Rosebu rg today . The Medford speedster aced both Op en Pro outings and captured the 250cc Pro laurels as well. R ick Bau lt (Roseburg Suzuki) took a I-I score to the 125cc Pro pay window. T he first race of the day was a 17 rider I 25cc Junior/Intermediate co mbined moto. Rosebu rg's Steve Nelson h as come on stro ng as of la te and put h is R oseb urg Yamaha H onda into a commanding lea d, controlli ng the tempo a nd setting a blisterin g pace that took h im a ll th e way to th e checkered flag over H onda-m ounted Mike Harwood an d Mi ke Booth (Suz). T he J u nior wi n went to Wayne Beattie (Kaw), who out paced Seth Malkon (Hon) and Tony Guido (Yam) . Mo to two had Harwood ho und th e pack to reap the harvest a nd ta ke th e rno to win and the overall, which put Nelson in the runner-up position. Daryl Hawkins (S u z) was third overall with a 4-3 tall y and Bea tt ie captured the Junior rnoto victory again beating Malkon (2-2) and Damon Schaefer (Kaw) (4-3). Another exceptionally fine race was all the 250s in one large pack. Hooper put h is 250cc Pro Link into the lead at the drop of th e ga te and dazzl ed the spectators with an impressive display o f· ariel tactics while outdistancing the Intermediates as well . Wes Roberts put his Honda acro ss the finish line to take the Intermediate win with second to R ick Huffman (Ya m H on of Rosebu rg ) and Steve Hunt (Suz) third. Kevin Seevers (Suz) p ushed from behind to take the Junior class wm. The second verse was same as th e first in Hooper's case, the H oop led this moto a nd again destroyed th e loa m y terrain-Huffman took over in seco nd as top Int erm ediate to take th e overall (2- I ) ahead of Rob erts (1-2). Wes Boden n er (Suz ) took the Jun ior win, posting a 3·\ tally which came up short when the overalls were posted . Seevers took the overall with a 1-2. . All 125cclOpen Pro s ran combined in both motos. Hooper hauled in th e loot in both of the O pe nou tin gs for a chunk of Ral p h Huffman 's 200%payback over Jim Jones on a KTM . J on es a nd Hooper argued briefl y until Hooper put the ham mer down and left the fig hting to Jones and a p ack o f 125s led by Ba u lt and veteran R ick Smith (Ya m Hon of R oseburg ).
