CA, MAY 14 Dan Turner, Dana Waxham and Dave WDod each took home top dollar in th e 125 Pro, 250 Pro and Open Pro classes, re- 38 spect ively , a t tonight's m otocro ss a t Sacramento Raceway. In th e two motos of th e I25cc Pro rac e, Turner used h is h ead an d his ridi n g ski lls to beat Ed Minton a nd G reg Michales during wh at turned o u t to be a Suzuki sweep o f the top I hree places. Turner start ed the first rnoto in third, outflew Mich al es over the double jumps for second pl ace an d was getting ready to pass leader Minton when a last lap cha rge by Michales made Turner decide to settle for a safe second. Turner's decision paid o ff wh en, in the second moto, he won th e first turn rac e and led Cycle West-sponsored Minton and Michales to the ch eckers. Waxham holeshot and ran awa y with the win in both motos of th e 250cc Pro race , but close racing for second between Wood, Randy Losh a n d Jim Ellis gave th e fans so me thing to watch. William Harrison/ Sierra-sponsored Ellis pa ssed Wood on the inside of a turn o n th e fourth lap but fell on th e six th la p to giv e Wood second pl ace for that moto. In th e second rn o to , Losh starte d third, Ellis fourth and Wood 11 th . Ellis was centerpunch ed at th e first lap fini sh, how ever, a nd dro p ped to the back of th e pack. Losh passed into seco nd pl ace and Wood, a fter going around the firs t lap pile-u p, worked hi s way in to fourth by th e finish . Wood, Losh and Ell is continued to dice durin g th e O pen Pro contest. Los h ga ted best the firs t rn oto but stalle d h is bi ke in a turn and fell to th e back of the pack. Ellis was now runner -up to Wood a nd took th e lead wh en Wood flew h is Yam a ha too far off a jum p a nd took th e n ext turn wide. Losh stalled hi s bik e again a nd gave his number-two spot to John Minok. Minok wa s n ow tryi ng to h old bac k Ellis, a nd whe n Minok stalled off a jump, Ellis wa s too close to sto p in time; th e two ta ngled a nd went down. Fourteen-year-old Charl ie Mit ch ell (Ya rn of Grants Pass) taught the pack a lesson in agony and defeat, ta kin g th e Li ghtweight m oney race (200cc an d below) while Jeff Campbell (Simp. son/El ite /Harry Lilly Suz ) did the sa me to claim the Pro a nd 250cc A ma in events. SOMA put on an excellen t race which ran flawl essl y, with o n ly minor inju ries o n th e quartermil e track which was oi led an d dust free. Briefly going over th e h eat races, th e 250cc qualifier number two saw Campbell co ll ect hol esh ot h onors with Mit ch ell , a nd T im McLanahan (Yam) seco n d an d th ird to transfer. In 125s, Clay Light (L O P/ Su per Seer / Bosc h Yam ) na iled down th e start with Mitch ell , Rod Bixel (Suz) a nd Stacy T esch (Su z) in tow . Second try had Campbell take th e lead a ll th e way to th e flag. Second went to McL an ahan and thi rd to Word . In th e 125cc A mai n , Bixel , Light a n d Mi tche ll carne o ff th e lin e th ree abreast, but accordi ng to th e re feree, Light " j u m ped " an d mov ed into th e penalty area. At the resta rt , Mitch ell took th e scra tch with Bixel in seco nd o n -a tric k wa ter-cooled Su zuk i. T esch rode in th ird a nd Light fourth after a row two start to cha lle n ge the tri o . Mit che ll a nd Bixel were battl ing it o u t front. The two made con tac t tim e a n d time again with Bixel ge tting by th e SO MA high point 125cc rider for the lead. Mitchell stayed close through o u t but couldn't get by, letting Bix el tak e the win. Third went to T esch , fourth to Light. T he 250cc A main had eig h t riders o n th e line. J eff Campbell came off the line in first with a devastating start over Tim McLanahan, Bob Klum (H on ) and Scott Annis (Suz) on th e ope n ing lap. Ca mp bell stretch ed out th e biggest lead of the evening , nearly a quarter of a lap, while Klum got around McLanahan for seco nd pl ace, but Campbell was by now lo n g gone. McLanahan dropped back putting Annis up a notch. In th e Open A main, Frank Word wheelied a wa y with the sta rt and was in complete control of th e race. Klum pu t his H onda in second ahead o f BruceTurnbull (Kaw). Turnbull a nd Klum wer e in a wh eel -to-wheel ra ce with Klum sta kin g a claim for seco nd a nd Turnbull third. The Lightweight money race is for the sma ll- bo res. Rod Bixel "floated" to turn one with a cozy lead over Charlie Mitchell , who took it back on th e next lap. Bixel and Mitchell put on quite a show for th e sp ectators with Mitchell corning out on top when it co u nte d for the fir st place money, Bixe l second and third to . Tesch. Final race of th e evening was th e Pro main, which had seven of southern Oregon's fin est on the line. Campbell got squirrell y but still managed to hold off Word going into turn one. Word, McLanahan, Klum , Greg Reynard and Brian Murphey (Bu l) gave chase, but Campbell was content with a lead, styling to the flag with Word co m ing up to chall en ge aft er a late rally.
