CN 00 O"l ...... (Above) Rick Johnson'. 260cc point Iud .hrank to 20. (Below) Broc . Glover Iud. 260cc winner Donnie Hen..n in their first moto bettie. Johnson and Hansen had 21 seconds on Glover, but on the next lap a rut claimed Glover. He tumbled down a straight and got rolling slowly, and restarted fourth. Johnson had been showing Hansen no mercy, but within the next lap Hansen was again the leader, sporting a safe lead. The spring on Johnson's shock let go, leaving Rick with a hardtail which had the fender riding on the rear wheel. He tried in vain to maintain a race pace, but was relegated to an eventual 11 tho Reid inherited second but couldn't close the 27 second gap Hansen had put on the pack. It was Donnie's win when the checkered flag waved with Reid and Bailey behind. Glover, Burnworth and Martin were 4-5-6, and back from there Liles and Hardick in 7-8. " I always try to to my best," said Hansen. " I just didn 't see any bad Iuck toda y. All I can say is I'll try to win Colorado (the final 250cc round next weekend) and hope that johnson has more trouble. I'm not going to give up now. " . "I was feeling really comfortable and then the spring broke," said Johnson. "T he shock started winding into itself and that was it. " 600cc National "You can't afford to follow anyone up that hill," said Shultz before the start of moto one. "In practice (Goat) Breker hit me in the chest with a rock and it knocked the wind out of me." When th e gate dropped Breker displayed h is holeshot abilities and led Shultz up the hill. Shultz stayed clear of Breker's roost and moved far right. Breker put a five second lead on Shultz in the early laps while Howerton and Sun diced for third. Honda's Phil Larson and teammate Danny Chandler .were , fighting for . fourth and Freewheeling Honda's Brad Wallace was seventh. Husqvama's Billy Grossi was the first of the big bore riders to succumb to the ruts. He got off in fourth gear, but re-entered the race after getting his wind back. Shultz started to gain ground on Breker, but then got his foot in one rut and his wheels in another. Rather than twist his tender knee Shultz threw it down and let Howerton and Sun by before he got going. Shultz rode like a wild man to regain second, but then " Magoo" Chandler powered by in a wide tum for second. Howerton and Sun were still going at it in 4-5, and by midrace Larson was alone in sixth. KTM's John Finkeldey and Yamaha 's Mike Bell came up through traffic {or 7-8. Breker didn 't let off the pace until he had to. His works Kawasaki's fram e broke near the steering stem and Goat was out of the points. Once Chandler was out front , he stayed there. Shultz matched the pace but couldn't catch up, and Howerton held third to the finish. Sun jumped off hard on a downhill, and by the time he got rolling Larson had fourth , Bell fifth, and Chuck sixth. Through the pack came Maico rider Jerome Heiberger for seventh and his highest placing this series. Eighth was Finkeldey on the big KTM 495. Other incidents marred the moto. Maico's Mickey Kessler went down on a straight and was run over by teammate Andy Sta cy. Both were alrigh t. KTM 's Donnie Cantaloupi and Yamaha rid er Jim Holle y crashed together in th e last tum, with Holley going down and Cantaloupi taking 10th. Suzuki's Alan King led Cantaloupi in after a dismal start. " I used to tape m y ankles because the y were sore ," said Sun. '~After that crash I think the tape helped hold my feet onto my legs!" Shultz led from start to finish in moto two. He was followed off the gate by Bell, Cantaloupi and Howerton, with Sun, Chandler and KTM 's Joey Schlag next. Canraloupi went out when his right wrist and thumb, still on the mend from a previous injury, became too painful for him to continue. Howerton, Sun and Chandler moved ahead of Bell for the 2-3-4 slots, and on the next lap Bell DNF. His shock's sh a ft broke, leaving his works Yamaha unrideable. Then Chandler gave up his frontrunner's spot with a high speed tumble down a straight. Magoo tried to walk back to his bike but collapsed and had to pack it in for th e day. It was now Shultz leading Howerton and Sun with a big gap to King. Larson came up to as far as th ird but faded to an eventual eighth. By m id-race Shultz had lapped up to eighth place, with all frontrunners in traffic. Then Howerton didn 't come out of the high section. He came coasting down to the mechanics pit area and fell off his bike, visibly in pain, and was airlifted by helicopter to Georgia Baptist Hospital where his broken leg was set. Shultz took the win with 34 seconds on second place Sun, with King third, which also set the top three overall positions. Breker rod e hard and cam e from mid-pack to fourth, sta ying mi stake free while o thers fell or faded. Finkeld ey was fifth a nd now looks to be a shoo -in for 500cc Rookie of th e Year honors, a nd he was followed by Grossi, H eiberger a nd Larson. " It was rough and hot o u t th ere," said Shultz. " No w I'm racing for points Magoo .wa sn ' t the points leader, so I wasn't racing him. My Championship caliber mechanic, Chris Haines, is the key to this thing. I'm ready for Colorado, where there are less ruts and it's easier on my knee. Now it's time for a little R&RI " said a happy Shultz. • Results 250cc NATIONAL: 1. Donnie Hensen (Han); 1-1; 2.
