k a-Canada- Northern California-Northe Novice main event, and Washington's Randy Green (American Hon) did the same to best the field in the Junior race. Frank W:ord III (Simp son / Sco tt U.S.A.lYamaha of Grants Pasa / HsD} won an awesome Expert main event aboard his XR750 over Brad Hurst (Pa nt her Racing Frames/ KRW Tri), who made a come-frombehind ride to finish second. The time trials got things started with Word putting in a lap time of 14.68, which early in the time trials looked to be a smoker. Don Dodge (Tri ) was out to change that and held a torrid pace to the flag- to take the night's fast time, which at 14.36 ties with Hurst for the track record which was set in the summer of 1979. Dodge also wasted very little time qualifying, fleei ng Mickey Fay (A m er ica n Honda) and National standou t John Wincewicz (Poweroll / Honda USA). Dodge had the heat all but wrapped up with Fay taki ng second and Wincewicz a tu m ble, letting Lars Trulson (Tri) take the third p lace and a transfer to the main. Word came ou t to wallup heat number two with Tommy "Chainsaw " McCullough (Vern 's Air Sales/ Bell Helmets/Albany Yam ) holding second a ll the way and Jeff Campbell (Simpson/ Elite/ Vern 's Air Sales Yam) third. In trophy dash action, Gary Trull (Longview Kaw) led a Novice wa r over Jeff. Ha rsha (Yam of Medford), Scott Nelson (C-A) and George McBee (T acoma Yam ). Giving chase was all they could do as Trull topped the riders who had fastest times in the Novice trials to take th e win and the brass. Junior trophy dash had Green grab the lead with rival Barry Pelkey (C-A) in tow. Pelkey was dead serious about beating Green but cou ldn 't find a . way around. The trophy dash that everyo ne anticipated was the Expert race . Po lesitter Dodge darted to the front in turn one with Hurst, Campbell and Word close by. Dodge was O K and scurried back to the p its to prepare for the main. Trull put his Longview Kawasaki into the lead in the Novice main event. With Honda star Doug Chandler out of the running, it looked to be easy sailing. Trull opened up a good lead only to have Mike Lawrence take over until a crash which brought out the red flag. The restart had a staggered start with Trull taking the lead over Danny Bennett (ND/ Bel Ray/Honda ), who was right there to snap it away. Trull, Rya n Fisher and George McBee (Ya m ) were also close to keep Bennett honest. Bennett was leading, but like some o£ his other Honda teammates, went for a DNF, putting Fisher into the lead for the win. In Junior action , Green once again shot out to the front with Pel key right there to give chase. Pelkey made radical advances but couldn't get around Green.
