Leavitt awesome at revived Cal Poly trial By T. J. Rafferty SAN L UIS OBISPO. CA. MAY 24 The Cal Poly campus here hosts manv athletic contest, but in recent years observed trials have not been among them. Envi- 36 . ronmental and insurance hassles had combined to squelch th e on ce popular event. Now , owin g to th e mutual efforts of Bob Miller and th e Cal Pol y Penguins, and renewed public interest in th e sport, the trial has been revived. Held al on g the creek out behind the dairy unit (udde r end o f camp us) , th e meet featured three loops of 10 sections. Mill er kept th e level o f difficu lty m od eratel y low to acco rnmodate the wide ra nge of eq u ip me nt an d tal ent on hand, bu t th e cha llen ges were su fficie nt for all bu t th e Ex perts. Former National Champion Lane Leavitt had littl e trouble navigating th e sections with no marks lost,..on an 80cc Ita ljet l Everyon e marveled at how welt th e tiny motor performed. though Leavitt's characteristicall y smooth style surel y added to the effect. Bu t, having ridden a loo p on the little bugger myself, I had to share their amazement. No Expe rt rrialer myself (they call me Thud Ra p id ly), I found th e little screamer would go nearl y everywh ere th e big fell ers did. The cla ss str uc tur e had th e top local Am ateurs in th e Ma ster 's class with Lane, then a cla ss each for Novices an d Beginners on trialer s, with classes for trail bikes (under seven inches travel ) and end uro bikes (over seven in ches ). T he who le thing came off clean ly (heh) : everybody had fun a nd agreed th a t they 'd have to do it aga in. For the final e. Leavitt, J oh n Hesch. Dan Dixo n a nd Bim Miller gave a demonstration. After stringing several international-calibersections. Leavitt switched to his 250 Italj et a nd showed how it 's done. The yo u ng amateur co-riders did quite well . aft er a few initial gulps. Bu t as ability tends to rub o ff. the whole foursome put th e specta tors through a few coll ective breath-taking exercises. Results MA:STERS: 1. Lane Leevrtt (Ito ) 0; 2. John.Hesch IBu l) 10: 3.
