Reiswig upsets Gray at Cyclel.nd ST By Little Rich CHICO, CA, AUG. 15 Black Plate #15. Ken Gray, who has consistently taken first place honors in the 250 and 500cc Expert classes this season on Cycleland's new cushion surface was put back a notch this week. Doug Reiswig brought out his new Knight-framed Honda 500 for the first time and proceeded to put Gray in second place for a change. The 250cc Novice action got heavy right away putting two riders down for a red flag and a restart. On the restart, Randy Scott was first into the comer followed by Jeff Mendes. Mark Schmeck made his way through the traffic pushing hard but could only make it to a third place finish, a position he is not used to. In 250cc Junior. action saw Fred Waybright come from behind to take over first on lap four with Joey Gresham moving into second on lap six. Mike Cagle rode a flat out race coming hard all the way to finish third. Results 80 NOV: 1. Chril Caner lYaml; 2. Joey Bolon ISuz). 125 NOV/JR: 1. Todd Ekl.. lYam); 2. Jail Mandas ISuz). 2SO NOV: 1. McConn sweeps Baylanels night MX By Jerry R. Newray FREMONT, CA, AUG. 12 With the action at Baylands Raceway's night moto~ross increasing almost every week, the spectator turnout grows also. The two or three .main motos that seem to really bring the fans to there feee are the 250 and 125cc Pros and the wild 80s. In the 250cc Pros, this week saw the super consistent Shawn McConn take his Yamaha and literally smoke all the rubber from his tires and lay it' down on the Baylands course. In the first moto, McConn put a holeshot on the rest of the field which proved to be just a sample of the riding skills that make McConn the top Pro rider at Baylands. With McConn way out on the rest of the field. the only real battle saw Kimo Casey and Brian Otto try to defend the honor .of an all Yamaha finish. The only thing in their way were two of the fastest Kawasakis on the course, those belonginl{ to Tim ~remaine and Eric Conard. As the moto progressed, Otto and his Yamaha pulled out to a small lead for second place with the Yamaha of Casey faltering due to some mechanical problems which allowed the Kawasakis to slide by. When .the checkered' flag was waved, it was once again McConn followed by Otto and Tremaine on his Kawasaki with the slowing Casey falling back to the number six position. . In the second and most important moto, once again it was McConn out in front followed very closely by Kimo Casey who seemed to have his problems sort~d out and then by a past runner-up Bruce Manzon and his Maico. In the fourth slot was Matt Arena. With a super group battle taking place, the bike fans really got a taste of what pro racing was all about. l'hey.saw the typical fights of Yamaha versus the Kawasaki and Maico and could cheer for their favorite riders. When the flag came down. McConn took first. The sprint to the finish line saw Manzon and his Maico shoot past the flag ahead of the rest of the pack followed by Casey. The win for McConn was his third in four weeks and his fourth for the 1981 season. Results 250 PRO: 1. Shawn McConn IVaml; 2. Brian Otto IVaml; 3. Kimo CaMV IVaml. 125 PRO: 1. Rick Ryan IVaml; 2. Anderson, Holland, Burgett blast Mulkey Pro Regional Qualifier By Jan Newman McMINNVILLE, OR, AUG. 29 A mild overcast day provided a perfect atmosphere for some hot competition in today's Pro Regional Qualifier at Mulkey ORV Park. Suzuki's George Holland wasted no time in showing his tail feathers to the pack in the first 125cc Pro class. He nailed the scratch and held it the entire moto. Jim Anderson (Yam) pulled into second and kept Halland in sight all the way. Several times Anderson was near enough to try to make a bid for the lead, but each time a minor hesitation or', lapped rider cost him the precious seconds that put Holland out of reach. Eric Hall (Yam) ran a consistent but lonely third until he ran out of gas with just over a lap to go. You could safely say Manning held fourth and fifth 0T! ne~rly every lap.
