EI Coyote returns foLodlST By Bill Spencer LODI, CA, AUG. 22 As the summer months wear down and with lots of racing going on in different places, the atmosphere of activities at the Lodi Cycle Bowl have chan~ with some of the.kids from the mini ranks' making their mark on the big boys. Aat:on HiD and Billy' Arbogast were the show of the night in 250cc Expert while Steve Carrillo, known for some 'time as the "Coyote," got married on the San Jose Mile and has returned to the racing scene even before, die, next and' upcdming mile. . . One of the more consistent facton'is Winkie Freitas in bQth the 80' and 100cc Expert classes where he' stiD is the kid to beat on finely tuned DaveBird Hondas and Yamahas. Taking second in the 80s was Mike Macedo on the McGill YZ with Kurt Chandler out in front of the ~t of the pack on his Salinas KX. Shad Johnson continued to over~hadow the 80cc Novice/Junior show with Dion Clardy in for the other trophy. Craig Johnson took second. lOOcc Expert to _ the fast fleeing Winkie. . Woody R~n continued to wipe up any of the lightweight classes with Larry Tofanelli the only other trophy winner in the below 250cc class. Billy Taylor had the 250cc Novice win all the way with Rick Frisk in for second. Red Needham handily won 250cc Junior on his Jorgy Suzuki wiht Danny McDonnell riding his CR250 Honda to second over Steve Mitchell. An excellent 250cc Expert show was available for those that like to attend short track racing in the Central Valley with Billy Arbogast doing !Dost of the leading but losing the win to Aaron Hill who did a magnificent job of passing in very tight corridors; again, a tribute to the fine work on continuing to upgrade this facility. Billy got the jump on the JOTgy CanAm and held the point quite well only only Hill the aggressor as crashing and bashing w~ going on amongst the other troops. Billy and Aaron left the crowd and had their own great battle for the duration with Aaron applying pressure throughout but without much luck until Billy got the first comer just a little off set and Aaron saw the hole. beating him off and down the back straight and to the flag. A thoroughly delightful show was watching Joe 'Knight taking third over Dave Walden and Rocky Robinson. The worst of the spillS went to Bruce Johnson and Steve Spenker with Johnson suffering a broken bone. Marv Lewis and Steve Mitchell put on a good 560cc Expert show with Lewis the winner. Brent Davis won 500cc Novice over Ken Jernig. Newcomers Mark Lacasa and Jeff Martons were one·two in 500ccJunior. Steve Carrillo brought out his old SC500 Yamaha and handily won the Expert portion of the big-bore classes after not racing and getting married ~o his mechanic-girl friend Donna. Mike Hayward did the second best job holding off Aaron Hill for the rest of the payoff positions. Results. 80 Ex: t. Winlcio Fr_ IHan): 2. Miko Macedo IVoml; 3. KUrt Chondlor IKlIwI. 80 NOV/JR~ 1. CA, AUG. 21 Hi~Point.sponsol-ed Eric McKenna returned to his, winning ways after a long layoff due to an injury at Sacramento's .Raceway·s night stadiumcross. McKenna took home the wins in both the 250 and Open Pro classes. In the fint moto of 250cc Pros, . Jimmy Robertson grabbed' the holeshot with Tom McKinney close behind. McKenna closed fast on the two leaders, ~nd they all swapped positioDS for the next few laps. McKenna finally took the lead over the double jumps and held it to the flag. Mota two was exactly lilr.e the fint - all three riden went hard for the lead. Once again, McKenna held it on longer over the double jumps and took the checltered flag first. When the gate diopped for the first mota of Open Pro, it was McKenna on his Sun River M/C Maico Into tum one in the lead. McKenna quicltly demonstrated his slUll at riding the big Maico as he stretched his lead. At the checkered flag it was McKenna first, Steve Arena on a -Suzuki second and Tim Phillis tI1ird.on another Sun River M/CMaico. I Moto two saw Arena push his Suzuki into tum one in the lead. HoWever•. McKenna took the outside line and came out first. -Once again he pulled out a big lead to take the overall.
