Juon Bigs defeated the Pee Wee Stock Junior pack of seven compact racera. Bigs had a clean fim moto win but 10st the second moto to that famous desperado Jeae James. James nabbed the second place trophy ahead ofJohn Chamberlin who picked up the third place brass. For Chris Pfatenhauer the 61cc Beginner class was a good deal. Chris had two wins to put him ahead of Guy Campbell, who turned in a 4-2 score. Half of the 8lk:c Stock Beginner division two class was made up of Kawasalr.is. Jesse James was not the only celebrity name on hand because Marvin Gaye won this Beginner race. Gaye took the first moto win over Bambino Tapia and Rob Sasen. In the final moto Gaye was in front but then Tom Holt passed him. Holt built up a Ascot Park drew the gas-it-for-cash riders in droves. In the 250cc Pro class there were so many riders that the class had to be divided into two divisions for qualifiers, a consolation race and a final event. BG Lubricants rider Doug Renno showed up for his first race at Ascot this season, and showed his nighttime racing abilities in the first division by leading the first lap. Russ Wageman slid by Renno on the next lap and then Husky-mounted Dave Gerig maneuvered by both of them. So for this division it was Gerig in first with Wageman and Renno charging from behind. Norman Nilsson got the jump on the riders in the second division. Running second was Edwin Amet on a new Maico. Jim Holley advanced on Amet and pasaed him, then did likewise to Nilsson and took first over Nilsson and Amet. Five riders were taken from each of these divisions as well as five from the consolation event and they faced each other in the final. When the final lit off Nilsson was out front. The pack had gotten to the last jump before the comer when Gerig gained momentum and flew so high off of the jump that he made the pass over Nilsson. Nilsson was in second until he stalled his Yamaha and this Ir.illed his chances for money. Maico-mounted Scott Johnson was in second for most of the race before_ Holley made one of his radical passes on a comer around the finish line and knocked Johnson back to third. Holley didn't have the time to work his way past Gerig and had to settle for second. great lead while Gaye didn't have a chance of catching up but instead had to worry about the threat of Honda rider Sasen. A 1-2 score still gave Gaye the win. Sasen had a pair of thirds and this was good for the only other trophy awarded in this class. Holt had an inconsistent 6-1 score and placed third overall. David "River Rat" Chambers had one of his better nighu this evening as he won both the 8lk:c Stock and Modified Junior 12 and over evenu. Traveling Troy Welty was his main competitor and won the fmal stock moto but had a poor overall score beause he DNF the fim moto. Welty alao won the f1Tlt Stock race but lost the deciding fmal race to Chambers. Joey Miller won the 8!lcc Stock Beginner division one race with two fine firsu. He had to fight all of the way though, and especially in the second moto. Rich Bates took his Honda to the early lead but was zapped by Miller on a sweeper. It was a tight squeeze but Joey got by and led it while Bates was being provoked by another Honda rider, Scott Tupper. As they crossed the fmish line it was Miller taking the win while Bates came through and raised his arm up in the air as he seemed to be happy with a second place win. Murray, MaupIn take Speedway 1.1.7 MX By Myron Hemley CHULA VISTA, CA,JULY 15 Weekly Continental Motor-sportS Club night MX racing at Speedway 117 saw Terry Murray take the overall in the 125cc Intermediate class with two blistering comebacks. In the first mota Murray got the holeshot with Chris Shaw second, Alex Leon third, David Capehart fourth, and Scott Sargent fifth. Murray went down in the third turn. dropping him back to fifth, while Murray passed Sargent on the second lap and Capehart on the third. Now in the lead, Shaw was being challenged by Leon in second. The two riders went even into the big Coca· Cola berm and charged the KPRI double double jump_ Shaw lost control on the fust double, sending him to the ground and into fifth place on the second of the doubles_ Leon now had a small lead over Murray who had moved into second. The one lap flag came out and Murray had closed Leon's lead to only a bikelength. Murray passed Leon l1alfway through the lap to take the win. Capehart finished third, Sargent fourth, and Shaw ftfth after the crash. In the second moto Leon was out in front of Sargent, Capehart, Shaw and Murray. Murray passed Shaw for fourth at the end of the second lap. On the third lap Sargent passed Leon for the lead. Capehart tried to pass Leon for second, but Leon held his position until Capehart moved even with Leon on a jump and took over second by passing him through the big CocaCola berm. Now it was Murray'S turn to take over third as he passed Leon on the ftfth lap. Murray was riding like a wild man after the two leaders. Murray quicltly passed Capehart for second at the start of the last lap. Sargent had a three bike lead over Murray, who was closing fait. Sargent fmished f1Tlt with only a half bike lead as Murray just ran out of track. Murray's second was good enough for the overall and added to his Coca-Cola/KPRI Summer Series lead. Sargent was second overall and Capehart's !l-!l fmish gave him third. In the 125ccJunior class Mark Scott was out front with Keith Craig, Bobby Maupin, and Roger Hayes following. Scott and Craig started to pull away from the rest of the field. They started dicing for the lead at the start of the second lap and Craig passed Scott through the Coca-Cola berm at the end of the lap_ Scott stayed with Craig, trying to pass him back for the lead. Every time Scott would try [0 pass, Craig would shut him off. But Scott saw his chance and passed Craig in the same place as he was passed one lap earlier. Craig .ICC I,. II tlll'HI=cr=1I II
