When the one lap flag came out Scott was trying everything to get the lead, but Craig held on to take the checkered flag. Maupin finished third. In the second moto Hayes got the holeshot with Maupin second, Scott third, and Craig fouM. Maupin started dicing with Hayes for the lead from the stan and toole it halfway through the second lap. Hayes passed Maupin going over the KPRI double double at the start of the fifth lap. When the white flag came out it was Hayes leading and Maupin right behind, and Maupin took over the lead for good with half of the last lap to go. EDDIE LAWSON Barona Oaks hosts two-tlay NMAMX Team Kawasaki KZ1000 Wins AMA Laguna Seca Superbike National Road Race By Tom Corley TERRY VANCE SAN DIEGO, CA,JULY 4·5 National Moto-sports Assoication racers traveled to Barona Oaks Minicycle Park for the fifth event of the Grand National Championship Series. These riden joined in with those who ordinarily race at Barona to make it one huge event. This race started on Saturday and con· cluded on Sunday with run·off events. Interrupting the Saturday schedule was a fire that was blazing over the horizon a few miles away. Though it did not come even close to scorching the track, many became concerned so they cleared out and the racing continued on Sunday. Sean Thornton won the first Pee Wee Stock moto over Justin Rich. Eric Hawes led Dennis Dahlin while Dustin Evans was bad in fifth. Evans made up for his poor first moto ride by leaving the rest of the field in the final go. Thornton was the runner·up rider and once again he was trailed by Rich. Thornton took. the first place trophy, and the Pee Wee riders LaIr.e home trophies that are often as tall as they arel The top five wtre Thornton, Rich, Evans, Dahlin and Hawes. Though the Pee Wee Stoclr. class was somewhat of a disappointment to Evans, the Modified race turned out to his delight. Evans showed his race ex· perience by taking two firsts. On the official results it was Evans, Chris Pfatenhauer, Dahlin, Thornton and Pat Healey. Shaun KalOl! waa one of the more succeuful Suzuki riders.
