Kellogg COSTA MESA, CA,JULY 24 On his return to America, Brad Oxley (now married) won the feature match race and made both main events at the Orange County Fairgrounds. Oxley had an outstanding night even though he wasn't really used to riding on the shon U.S. tracks, showing any doubters that he is an established top speedway rider. Also this week, and for the next nine weeks. Costa Mesa speedway will be covered by U.S.A. Television. Just a few shon weeks ago, Robert Pfetzing was making his first speedway ride. Last week, this young man won the Division One Handicap main. This week, old "Five Flavors," riding from the 20-yard line, did it again winning his second Handicap main event in a row at Costa Mesa. Pfetzing led the entire race almost from stan to finish. Only once, and ever so briefly on the second lap, did Tom Burba challenge him, but Pfeuing held him off and took the win. Coming from way back on the 40yard line was Mike CUI"OfiO, a quiet man who was probably the hottest rider on the track tonight. Cur050 moved through the pack with that perfect speedway style, and by the third lap he was in second place. Unfortunately for Cur05O, there weren't enough laps in the race, and he had to settle' for second. Right behind Cur050 was another 40-yard liner, Dave Sims, and fourth was Jan Ballard. Tom Burba was fifth. and Brad Oxley had gone out on the first lap with bike problems. The Scratch consy became a twoman match race between Lance King and Bobby McLain. Alan Christian couldn't make the call; word was he reinjured his shoulder. Dave Sims also didn't make the call. King took the gate shot and led for the entire race. At the wire it was King by about five bike lengths. The Scratch main event put Oxley inside in lane one; right next to Oxley in lane two was hot Mike CUI"OfiO. Sandwiched in lane three was, perhaps, the best Scratch rider of all time, Mike Bast, and way outside in lane four was Craig Schader. All the riders took turns touching the tape in anticipation of the gate going up. The crowd loved every tense minute of it. Rderee Irwin Moon held on to the bolton, which to the riders must have seemed like forever. Finally, the tapes went up. Oxley was fU'St into turn one with Bast slightly outside. Yet, next to Oxley corning into the tum third was Curoso and Schaefer. Coming out of the tum, Oxley went a little too wide, perhaps worrying too much about Bast, and this enabled Curoso to take full advantage which he did. With Bast way outside, Cur050 was able to sneak inside and coming into tum three Cur050 was in the lead, Oxley was second, and, unbelievably, Bast was third with Schaefer fourth. Cur050 rode the rest of the race right there in first place. It was a very impressive ride for the comeback rider. Oxley fmished second, Bast was third, and lost in the dust, Schaefer wasfounh. Normally the Scratch main is the last event of the night. However, that has now been changed. Every week now there will be a battle of the main event winners, a three-Iapper raced Handicap style to determine the total winner for the night. The Skol match race will be matched by (total for the rest of the season) a $5000 purse. The first of these this week was "Five Flavors" Pfetzing versus Mike Curoso. Cur050 rode from the 40-yard line while Pfetzing rode the 20-yard line. When the gate went up, Pfeuing got a good stan. In the back straightaway, Cur050 narrowed the gap slightly. However, on the second lap, Cur050 had bike trouble and had to pull off the track so all Pfeuing had to do to win a double header was to finish the last lap which he did. • Results HANDICAP MAIN: 1.
