At the start Rick Asch ju m ped into a good sized lead with Aaron Bassett (Mai ), John Petty (Mai), and" Scott Gi lman following. Eierstadt stuck his throttle wide open and within four laps made his move in to first. Gilman, running second quickly pulled away from Petty and Asch, three-four. During the 125 Pro motos Rich Eierstadt saw only one rear tire through the whole day. The tire belonging to FMF's Alan Smith . Alan holeshot both motos and led until Eierstadt came rocketing by . Eierstadt rode stock bikes in both 250 and 125 classes. Brian Myerscough rode a 3-4 score which was good en ough for third place money beating out John Oswald in the overall. One of them, Marty Bass (Yam) flat put it to the combined 250 /410 /750 Production class, then turned around and took second in 410 Cafe. Box-stock production racing is a big thing in Texas. Arizona's own Randy Gerb er (Ho n), with his 500 no longer stock, took max points in the co mbined Cafe class, as he and Californian Tom Hayner (Yam) provided the fireworks race of the day. Another neat 250 was the super-sane VR/Scorpion based Montesa that Tom Aguirra used to take 250 Cafe, A side note on the noise /muffler issue: Bill Simmler was running a street-legal Torque Engineering pipe on his 125 GP Honda, and to the ear, it was sUJXr quiet, Come sound test time the meter read 116 db, most of it valve no ise ! What now, MIC/AMA/ e t al? The day's premier race, 250 GP, turned into a war of attrition as Jim Vialovos ("I'm gonna get you this time, Dave") trailed Dave Emde at the finish (the two surviving EXJXrts) ; and Steve Carroll hung in as so le surviving Novice o n the Fantasy Fac tory Suzuki. Pat Eagan crashed hard after a huge sideways step-out co ming into tum six and Dave Old p ulled off with a flat tire .
