Sc hneiders. Somebody said make him a member, and so it's with great pleasure that I announce PMC's first honorary life member. Mr. Ronald Schneiders. Of course we don't expect to see him at any of our meetings, but in one fell swoop we've solved two of his problerns.: one, he can really keep an eye on the d rawing, and two. he 's ineligible to ride something above and beyond his abilities anyway. We at P:'IC know we have problems with the Greenhorn (anything that big and of that nature is bound to ), and next year our follow up crew will make it th e last 60 miles and our clock rider Neil Fergus won't break his toe. Mike Hinshaw told us Tuesday following the run that he was recommending it for National status next year. BILL DEAN Pasadena MC Although the actual gat heri ng of the Al\1A Congress is not unt il this fall, the standing rule s re q uire that all propo sals fo r new or amended ru les must be placed on the agenda not less than sixty (60) days pr ior to convening . For t his reason we are soliciting yo ur suggestions for mod ification of the c urrent Sportsman rules, to be made in writing and to reach us no later than the fifteenth of July . Time is short! This year the Congress will not be involved with professional competition rules as in the past, but will concern itself with Sportsman rules . legislative and public relations matters . Please write or type your ideas as clearly and concisely as you ca n and mail them to us as soon as possible. We'll be in touch with you soon after to assure we have fullest understanding of what you want us to do in your behalf. I am sure everyone is sick of hearing about the Horn by now, b ut I feel compelled to comment on some ru mors whi ch might appear to put me in a bad light. I am speaking of course of my receiving the number two starting position. I heard on the grapevine prior to the drawing date which appeared on the official entry form that I had received the number two position. I am told that they actually had the drawing a week prior to the date they advertised. Whether this is true or not I don't know. What I do know is that I had nothing at all to do with getting this number. Any knowledgeable enduro rider will tell you that number one or two is the "kiss of death" in Western endures, particularly Greenhorn. These numbers practically guarantee that you can't win. You spend your day breaking trail, overshooting corners, getting lost and jumping in on inexperienced checkers who are n o t set up o r ready to properly record your position. If there were any shena nigans connected with this drawing it was an attempt to make me lose, not to assist m e in w inning. If I we re to choose an ideal numbe r to ride on it wo ul d be be twee n ten and twenty but never , never o ne or two . BOB STEFFAN L.A ., Ca lif. Copyrigtn Cycle News, Inc. 1974 . I wonder if the q uantity/quality fee dback and responses received by participants would not be a basis for another prize. That is, that he who would submit to Cycle News the most or best respo nses to Enduro letters written, that you might p ublish them, and he re ceive some published recognition also. The issues, the Enduro letters best written, the responses that may come : Were they all to be abstracted and co llated into a chronology subject by subject, gleaning the different observations, reasons, and persuasions put forth and answered, there would indeed be some pithy reading and a text-book interest for many like myself who may also be "out of it " as none-too-active enthusiasts who are trying to catch up on what is what. Really, my four teen-age sons wo uld have to fight me for those copies of Cycle News, provided that they had not already beat me to them, and typically bent them out of shape stacked in th eir rooms until Ole Dad disco vers that the damn t hing was not mail ed o ut late afte r all.
