N. Survey '73 HODAKA-BILITY Dark, gray and damp weather at Ventura opened the Speedway week on a fast but slick track. In the first event Dan Becker went wide coming out of tum three and righ t in to· the wall, tumbling end over end tied up with his motorcycle (Both came out ok.) This problem was the rule rather than the exception for the first half of the program. The promoters worked on the track trying to loosen up the hard packed surface, and during the half-time in tennission everyone worked on the track and by race time had brok~n the surface up sufficendy to put on a good night of racing. Dubb Ferrell, the little giant, pulled off the win against Steve Gresham in the Handicap Main event with the Bast boys running third and fourth. The Scratch Consolation event just about didn't come off because two of the four riders caine up with engine trouble. The promoter faced with running a two man event, felt this was unfair to the paying public so he asked for a volunteer. Dubb Ferrell jumped at the chance to ride in this event so now there were three, but at die start Larry Moon dropped his chain and we were back to a two man event. Chains were a super problem all nigh t for Mark Cherry. The first time in the pits when he was watming up his bike, the primary chain let loose, much to his surprise, because it was a braod new chain. Then in his first race when he dumped the clutch, the rear chain broke and as he told me later, he had only ridden one or two events with that new chain. He said, ill think someone is out to get me." The tmal event of the night. saw Steve Bast and Bill Cody running neck and neck in the Scratch Main Event. Steve won the event and right after the race went home and packed up for a week'.. running in Northern California along with his brother Mike.. BAKERSFIELD • The fans keep on' winning at Bakersfield each week. They let the Promoter know who they want to see in the match race and he puts the show together around their wishes. There were seven even ts of two-man competition. In all there were four events or heat races with the winner going to a run off, or semi, then two semi evel\ts; the winners having at it in a Showdown Match Race. Mike Curoso topped the field for the win. Bakersfield only runs 20 races a season. We are past the half way point and there have only been four different riders to win the Scratch Main Event at Bakersfield. Steve and Mike Bast, Bill Cody and Danny Becker. Now it's Larry Sbaw out running the pack to hold up his end of the Bast Brothers Welding Team for the win in the Scratch Main Event. The most popular event of the night at Bakersfield seems to be the Second Division Main because of just one man, Rick Newby. Rick made it three in a row, much to the delight of the fans who Love to see a home town boy work out. The race meet was not with out its bumps and grinds. I keep a list just to see how many guys get off in a given night. Bill Cody got Steve Gresham, then Mike Kon1e got traction and fell in front of Ken Cartee and Ken ended up on top of him. Mike Konle didn't make the restart and was replaced by Dan Toomey. Bill Gray llipped at the starting line. Big Mike Konle came back and was involved with Dan Toomey, the rider who had rep!aced him earlie~. Dan Toomey went through thc wall at the end of the first straight away. Both were all right. Steve Gresham slid out in the match race and got a restart. Billie Gray again this time got hung up on Jeff Sexton and wen\ down. And there were several others; too numerous to mention, but that's what it's all about. The highlight of the night was the fmish of the Handicap Main even t. Greg- Comstock got one of the rare chances to compete in the Division One racing and was out to show everyone that is where he belongs. For five laps he held off the hungry pack on a bike that was shooting ducks all the way and as he came into the last lap cracking and popping Dubb Ferrell squeezed him out at the Iin~ for the win. That was the second in a row for Dubb after winning in Ventura. IRWINDALE 1t's been said that there is only one kind of Speedway motorcycle, the ESO, but we all know there are two. The J.A.P. and the ESO. But young Phil Moon showed everyone there are three, as he won the Second Division Main on a Velocette. Phil is the. youngest of the three Moon boys riding Speedway, and I guess like any other family, the youngest gets the hand me downs. The big track at Irwindale was fast and not as wet as in the last few weeks. So the racing was a lot closer, and far fewer guys got off. . Ron Taylor rolled off over the back of his mount, western style, like in the old time movies. He got his foot caugh t in the stirrup and was dragged for a ways un til he got loose. (He was not hurt). Steve Gresham on the other hand was down and out for several minutes after he ran into Super Stop Ken Cartee. Ken had just put his bike sideways coming down the front straight and stalled. As Steve threw it down to keep from hitting him, Steve went over the top side and caught it in the ground. He did ride again that night and was disquaJified for breaking the tape. In the Scratch Consolation event the O.K. flags
