r slipping wide on the sharp tum of the cam shaped track. Drew (Oss) had the lead briefly before Moura! came b)'. The two then exchanged the lead at least twice before Moura! pulled away to win by twen ty five yards. In the 360 class won by John Gran t (Bul), Dennis Robinson (Yam) came from a second row start to lead from the first lap in his qualifying heat. Robinson again was first in the lead in the final followed by Manuel Crummett and Ron Grant. Grant won a dice with Robinson for the lead position. The two were way out front with Robinson running second when m~chanical woes stopped Robinson leaving a fmishing order of Grant, Crummett, and Bill Calicura. The Wanderlust M.C. (a road rider motorcycle club), and John Soares have a five year record of large crowds at this annual event on the Fourth of July. Previously held in daytime, but because of the seasonal heat, the race was shifted to a nigh t race in conjunc tion with a fireworks show. The stands didn't start filling up until about dusk, but they didn't stop either. By eight, the stands were full, but the crowds continued to come. By 11:00 p.m., cars were lined up for blO,cks around the track just to watch the frreworks. Somebody in the John Soares organization or the Wanderlust M.C. did the right promoting. Held at the same time as the nearby JO series short track at Fremont, 120 riders were at Antioch, many from the. Sacramento and Stockton area and then the White point seekers from the Bay area. Kenyon out at the finish line. The two were closing on Kole, but it would have to have been a long Main before any catching happened. Scott Pearson made another step closer to his Expert card by winning yet another 360 Junior Main over AI Wood, riding a sirniliar Kawasaki. The two make the Short Track versions of this model 350 look really super, and the professional days are just around the comer. Pearson is riding a Sam Arena model and Wood a Cancilla v.:rslon. The migh ty minis appear to be taking over much of the limelight as they grow in numbers each week. The number of Experts is increasing, but now as fast as the number of newcomers that are flocking to this new, fast sport, called two wheel racing. A new name was added to the victors list in the 70cc Novice class, with Jimmy Soto notching the win over Danny Espinosa and Johnny Krusemann. All the while Randy Mamola still wins the two Expert runs, but Mike Fruzen and John Land wiU still keep him honest, expecially since his mini days are numbered. The age of 14 approaches and the sportsman run is near. At Oakdale Mamola did the same thing again, twice, but it was Ben Zakarian that was the man that DEUVERANCE. • 1 M .... CI> '" 3: w z W ...J t.l > t.l Jim Odom Series by Bill Spencer FREMONT, CAL., July 4, OAKDALE, CAL., July 7 - Jerry Kole popped into the winners circle for the July 4th running of the Jim Odom series, and the con tin uation of the weekend racing saw Carl Yerby win the Saturday night feature at the Pioneer Arena in Oakdale. The third in a series of 11 J 0 races saw some of the District's top Experts off on the circui t and so some new winners were on hand. Jerry Kole, last year's Scrambles champ won the 360 Expert end, and Kirk Tardiff won his first Main even f in some time, in the 250 Expert run. Tardiff pulled a good hole shot off starter Hoy Odom and used it to good advantage to win over TT specialist Mike Renslow and one of the top Black plate competitors, Mike Kalamaras. The two Ossas of Chuck Kole and Pat McCaul finished fourth and fifth for the poorest shOWing for those two recently. Kole's Jackson Motor special evidenlly blew the gearbox and Pat jus t didn't seem to be with the program. McCaul still holds the overall point lead but the gap is closing. Jerry Kole's win in the bigger class was an easy one but only after the. battle for second had its end. Kole had the easy route for a start wi th Phil Cancilla holding off the pack until Mike Kenyon put on the pressure and wen t by with Manuel Dalan in tow. Mike looked at his best for the season in tonight's run but with lots of pressure from D,atan, Manuel put a shot on' him coming off the last tum and nipped Yamalube 2·Cycle Oil helps you get wherever you're going dependably. Super mini shoe Randy Mamols in 'action. followed him across the line twice to win .the Junior portion of thing. Benny better watch it or that magic green card will grab him. This track is the big attraction, with the minis now totaling over 55 for the nights racing. Combine that with over 150 sportsman riders and it makes for.a full evening, and the jammed grandstands prove its value. Carl Yerby won the Expert M;lin, riding his Honda to the victory over Gene Amais and Ken Cave. Cave had to switch from his speedway type bike to an Elsinore just before the Main when he couldn't produce any brakes. Also, in the 250 Junior, Danny Mills had to do some fast changing to get some brake on his Yamaha before the Main. He wound up second to Steve Runnels.
