This was apparent when Sumner McK.nigb t was left sitting on the line when the starter failed to see that he was not ready to go. Rick Woods got the short end of a poor running bike in both Mains. He had a large lead in the Scratch Main only to have his bike start missing in the second lap. As Bill Cody passed him, Rick held off Larry Shaw in the next turn, but Shaw got by on the back slot. Th'en it was Ed Williams turn to get by the U.S. Championship in the last lap. And that is the way they finished. Woods had a similar problem in the Handicap Main Event and had to settle for third behind Scott Sivage and the winner Mike Curoso. COSTA MESA . Eriday. the thirteenth and a fuI.1 moon to boot as we wrapped up our Speedway week. You can say what you like but a lot of guys will not ride on the thirteenth day of the month and if it is Friday the 13th they get just a bit edgy, add a full moon and you get a lot of strange things going on both in the grandstands and the race track. Because of the Fair now running at Costa Mesa the Speedway show was free to the public and like last week if you were not in your seat by 7 :30, you didn't get one. Several thousand people lined the wall because there wasn't a seat left to be had at the start of the race. The date or the full moon claimed its share of riders; CuDum went down and it looks like he may have broken his leg again; Scott Sivage had his bike go bad again as he led in the Handicap Main event and settled for third behind Jeff Sexton and Greg Haserot, this was the first big win for Greg this season. Rick Woods had a repeat of Th'hrsday night and haP engine trouble and did not get a transfer out of his heat race. Randy Riggs, assistant editor of Cycle World, is working on a Speedway story from the inside and he .wan ted to do it from the rider's poin t of view, so he became on.e for a nigh t. Randy had true racing bad luck his flrst time out. The bike would not fire and he missed his chance to ride. Later that night there was a special event for a few of the reserve riders who had not ridden and Randy got h.is big chance. He got off the line well, but went a little wide and was .passed. On the second lap he got his nerve up too much and gassed it too hard coming"in the turn and went down, but came up with a big smile, and a Jot of free advice from his new friends in the pits. Again you may say bull about the moon or the date but no one came out for the Scratch Consolaton events, all kinds of reasons so this event was scratched for the nigh t. The big winner of the nigh t was Ligh tning Larry Shaw in the Scratch Main event. This past week was the best one that Larry has had this season. He got second Thursday nigh t in the Scratch, and he won the Scratch Wednesday at Bakersfleld and again on Friday at Costa Mesa. Sixteen year old Bruce Penhal won the Second Division main and at trophy time he had a long look at the Miss Orange County Fair Queen who was the trophy girl for the night, then reached up and put his arm around her waist, stood on his tip toes and gave her the biggest kiss of the night. From left; Mike Bast, Mike Konle, Don Cullum and Las Chanky in action. Nowl Get No Fade Stops From Drum Brakes-Equal to Disc Brake PerformanceI Introductory Offer .
