Dealer lnquiries lnvited CZ Rainier Spring MX Finale by Jan Newman, BEND, ORE., June 24 - The Rainier Spring MX Series came to a close today with the Experts riding the Main Event and Randy Limbeck taking home the big Pot, The race drew a large roster of Amateur riders plus more than the usual n umber of spectators. All classes provided good competi tion bu t the day really belonged to the Experts. Limbeck led off the line.. in the opening race and throughout the race no one saw anything but the rear of his Elsinore. A t the scratch Limbeck was followed by Ron Jensen (Hon), John English (Hon), Tracy Lantz (Mai), Barney Newman (Mon), Vernon Gabbert (Hon) and Chuck Sun (Bul). Jensen and English were in a group competing for a special purse due to failure to qualify for the Rainier purse. As the pack came around in the second lap, English took a wi~e sweep on a tigh t comer - nearly taking Sun off the course en rirely. This move cost English dearly and he dropped a handful of positions. Sun took advantage of the confusion and leaped ahead to move into fourth behind Lantz. Newman held Gabbert off for half the race until he developed rear brake problems and eased up. Gabbert moved past Sun when Sun went down momentarily. Then Lantz, Gabbert, and Sun battled it out right to a tight finish at the flag. Dan Chandler (Hon). John Schwendcner (CZ), English, Jensen and Limbeck were off fJrst in the second round. Chandler's lead fell when he killed the engine in the first lap. Limbeck lost no time in gaining the lead again. Gabbert, Sun, and Mark Esteroerg (Mai) movrd up to dig out a spot at the top. Scbwendener held second and Estcrberg 'movrd up' to third at the finish. Sun and Gabbert once again tested the reflexes of the scorekeepers at the finish. Moto three became a survival test. Scbwendener, Jensen, Limbeck and Sun took the lead. Limbeck once again took the lead as riders began taking soil samples. Chandler, English, Sun, Lantz, Ken Wheaton (Mai) and Grant Hudkins, (Yam) all were down - some of them twice. Wheaton barely missed a parked Car as he came off but Lantz out.spectaculared him when he went ovrr the top, through the fence and almost ended up on Highway 26. No one was hurt. Sun recovered to fmish second and Gabbert was third which w1'" also the way they finished the day. Wanderlust .Short Track Story and Photos by Jame.
