on that new Honda Elsinore but was hanging in at third plac" and fmt 400 Exp"rt going on to tb" second loop whm h" hit a bump that ,,,nt tb" gas tank flying off. Jim dropp"d out of th" rac" and wb"n last s,,"n h" and Larry RO"s<:kr, whos" Baja had s"iud, w"re making plans to go water skiing. According to St"ve Staats, who took s~ond overall today, that Honda Elsinor" is all that th" road tests said it was and maybe then some. The only chan~ th"y made on th" bik" was to replac" th" stock shocks with Curnutts. Th" bik" has lovely handling and gobs of power. I notic"d that St"v" had also add"d a gigantic gas tank, too, but that is standard for th" des"rt. Ev,," with the larg" tan k Steve ran ou t of gas hal f a mil" before th" pits, but it was downhill and later I I"am"d that h" wasn't topp"d off when h" pitted, so th" gas miJeag" r"ally isn't as bad as one would ~ I"d to believe. A.C. Bakken (Hus) put wedding plans ou t of his mind long enough to take third overall for first heavyweight Expert today. H ehad been running fifth through the pits, but moved up two places when Mitch and Fishback dropped out, and Jeff Kirk (Yam) took fourth for third 250 "Expert. Did Dic k Harris get good after Glendale Yamaha started working on his bike, or did Glendale Yamaha sponsor him because he was getting faster? At any rate, Dick has been doing very well lately, taking six th overall today for second heavyweil(ht Expert, sO somebody is doing something right. Poor Jeff Jeffries has really had a string of bad breaks (no pun intended). You may recaU he ruptured his spleen at the Barstow-to-Vegas, got better, broke his collarbone at Master Links five weeks ago and today, making yet another comeback on his Combat Wombat, Jeff led the Division II battle for the first loop before breaking his bancUebars at check three. However, Jeff's doctor had told him not to falloff any more motorcycles, so when the hancUebars came off in his hands Jeff somehow managed to keep the bike uprigh t un til he coasted t<>-a stop. As it turns out, Tim Bowman (DKW) , an Amateur, took first in the Division II class, with another Amateur, Roger Dubaich (Yam) taking second, and the first Expert, Jim Wheater (Hus) taking third. Of course, as far as poin ts . go that is all immaterial. Riders tell me that the 100's MC did a really suepr job on today's race. There were no complaints about ribbon or Hme missing either on the road coming in or on the course. There were sections with lots of rocks, but there were also lots of places where you could sit back and rest while cruising down a fire road. The weather was just hot enough to make it feel good to be moving, although the breeze got out of hand a couple of times and threw a bucket of sand in everybody's face. Expecting the blistering heat usual for this time of year in the Mojave, 100's MC made the course mercifully short with only one difficul t hill and one rock section where the Novices (no offense, you guys) put on quite a show, bouncing from rock to rock and th"n doing "Laugh-In" get-offs because they were too tired to put a font out to break the fall. Ken Childs, first Division]] Novice, riding a Rickman Zundapp, said everything was going great until the last check when the marker swiped too hard and the tank card came off. Ken grab~d the card and tucked it in his kidney belt. At the finish line, Kw puJkd the card ou t of his belt and handed it to th" 1OO's member and rnde away, leaving the card taker holding a soggy mass of green and black pieces of paper. Oh, well, his number will prnbably show up on aU the lap charts anyway. ... - Wb¥ does tbe YalDaba MX Racing TeBlll ask lor PennzollT ... ....
