Mitch Mayes: Death by the button. by Alice Rhea BARSTOW, CAL.,July 15 - "Whoever that was in the lead never did come out of the pits," commented a spectator, "And that guy in the pink leathers has the lead now." That could only be Doug Winchell, riding his 250 Bultaco in for his second-ever ftrst overall win. The starting area was a vast run-off area, full of gullies and washouts and more gullies. Rocks lined the bottoms of the washes and lurked behind bushes and many riders thought seriously about not even bothering to sign up \f the. rest of the course was that bad. "Well," observed, one Trail Novice, "When the calendar says Stoddard Wells, you know you are in for it, but the course turned ou t to be really bitchin'. Most of it was really fun to ride and about half of it was super and for this area that is more than you can hope for." He went on to say how he, as a trail biker, really appreciated the .cobby starting area, "The big bikes didn't have much of a chance to out run us, so when I got to the bomb I was still pretty well out of the dust." That must by why the Trail Novices fmished so early in the day. By the time Doug Winchell pulled up for first overall, there were about 30 Trail Novices who had already completed their required one loop. Ron Rodman (Hod) was it all the way with Jim Squyres (Yam) buzzing after him in second place. About ten miles out on the second loop, Jim broke off the right footpeg and shortly ~ter that the left footpeg bit the dirt, spitting Jim over the handlebars. Russ Jenkins (Hod) and Mark Barnes (Yam) got by Jim while he was sorting tbings ou t and finished in that order wi th Jim hanging on to fourth. Jim commented that he thinks he is tw'o inches shorter after his ride because he couldn't stand up after losing his pegs. (Ouch!) Mark Adent does the most spectacular get-offs in the desert. Today hi: made it aimost all the way to the bomb when he hit a hole. A Checker who stopped to see if Mark was still alive said the bike stayed near the ground but Mark flew about twenty feet into the air. Mark has rock rash and bruises all down his left ribs, but nothing serious. He says he is going to the river to cool off before he gets any wilder. Maybe he should think about being a stun t man. I hear tricks like that one pay upwards of several hundred dollars...if you live to coUect. Doug Winchell almost made ftrst to the bomb today and thought he was going to get to ride a whole race out of the dust for the first time in his life, but Jim Fishback, riding a 400 CZ again today, slipped by him at the last minute and then Mitch Mayes (Hus) charged into the lead. Mitch held the lead all the way around, but dropped out in the pits. His kill button had grounded out, and, of course, that is the very last tbing you look for when your bike goes unn ..unnnn, uuun ...and quits. By the time they discovered the problem everybody had gone by and the bike was loaded up anyhow. Fishback had let Steve Staats slip by ---
