Dunes By John Grout Photos by Racing Photos VALENCIA, CAL., Nov. 1.4, 1971 Raymond Soffa, who was riding a well waterproofed Bultaco, was the only rider among. 300 entries at today's all-Junior motocross at Indi"", Dunes that was able to collect a perfect three for three. Soffa, a contestant in the races for the more experienced 100cc throttle-twisters with four or more motos' experience, roared to long-yardage victories in all three of his starts while dodging the mud hole on the front part of the Shadow Glen course - the one which kept getting his fellow riders into trouble. The only racer to ever lead the even tual overall winner was Bob KJjne on the small but potent Steens bike. However, KJjne wasn't able to hold that lead for any length of time, and, when SoHa got ready he got the front-running spot. Finishing behind the Bultaco flyer on the day's overall charts were two Rickman riders: Chuck Herbert and Ron Capadagli. Eddie Rinnert (Hod) turned back Dick Lande (Hon), Chuck Billiet (Hod) and Mike Merrick (Hod) in gaining the overall win for the 100cc Beginners. J e£f Vidi, Penton-mounted, had same fierce duels with 'Yamaha rider Larry Bird and another Penton racer, Tom Alexander, before he was finally able to accomplish the "big score'" against the 125cc Beginners in Div. "A". While Tom Glum (Bul) and Bob Koester, who was also riding a Bultaco, were too close at' press time to determine a winner of the HB" group. The big brass in the races for 125cc Novic~s went to: Gary Huber (Bul) and Tracy Walters, who was Suzuki-mounted. . Kurt Koder (Yam) seemed to dispose of the 250cc Beginners in a handy fashion, and should be returning to the racing wars nex t time out as a fairl y competent, four-plus competit,?r. Two Bultaco riders, Rod Scott and Bob Boyle, fought wheel-to-wheel for the better part of the day during the three heats for 250cc Novices in division "A" - and the only thing that they were able to Ie'arn, was that they had tied for th'e day's overall on the final results sheets. Taylor Sisco (CZ) and Ellis Robertson, wh 0 was straddling a very rapid Bultaco, finished 1st and 2nd in 250, division "B" heats. Larry Kopp (Hus) was the overall victor among the Open Beginners. While Gary Dranow, a heady-type rider on a fast CZ, proved to be too much against a fine field 0 f 0 en N ovic es. '-Bower rode' his familiar Penton to a third in the 125 class and a Maico to win the 250 class. _ Bower took advantage of other Experts' hard luck as Bill Urban was forced out with transmission problems and young Morris Malone sustained a foot ,injury in the 250 class. Gary Harris worked demonaically to overcome a bad finish in the first mota and took a deserved second overall ahead of Santa Ana, Calif.'s Steve Erickson. The 125 Expert races showcased B1II Urban's established ,talent and the rising expertise of Jim Beauchamp. Urban and Beauch«mp finished one-two every race as Beuachamp kept pressure on the winner lap after lap. Dave Smith and'Mark Nohr were like a two truck and a Corvair - inseparable all day. Nohr had to settle for second as Smith beat him two out of three. Brent Rhoades was smooth and steady in third place. Bruce McDougal found the damp, dust-free surface to his liking and won all three of his races in the 250 Intennediate class. Doug Sherman returned from two months of shooting and hooking Northern California wildEfe to place second in this competitive class. San Diego's MarK Lickerr was third. . Robert Spicer' and John Volkman were 500 and 125 Intermediate winners. Spicer had two first and a third on a Nearly 30 riders made up the 500 Junior en.try and Jim SCott topped the herd. Urban and McDougal were joined by the day's only other three moto winner, Richard Pinnick i,{ the ] 25 Juniors. Ron DeSoto returned to CMC motocrossing but retired early with mechanical problems on his Mid-Valley CZ. ' The Maico rider dominated the 250 and 500 Expert divisions, beating a sparse field oj the professional riders. Schutz alternated between screaming around the course and driving lazily as the mood struck him for six wins in as many races. Dave Pessey and his electric Ossa promised to be a threat according to Pessey but he tangled with another rider in the first moto and screamed insults into the night air as the Schutz-led pack disappeared into the distance. Pessey experienced mechanical problems in the next moto to ¢ve Schutz the clear vjctory. Pessey was riding an Ossa with a new wrinkle inside. The inner workings been hooked up so that electricity to the coil was interrupted momentarily when the shift lever was depressed. This shut the engine off while the transmission was shifted, thus obviating use 'Of the clutch. Pessey was enthusiastic over the device and looked fast in the third moto. Three riders tied for second place in the 250 Expert class. Pessey, Bill Rubly and Rod Steffler each had a second, third and fourth. Joe Scotland found the absence of Tom Cook and Jeff Wright gratifying and had an easy night to beat Bob' Brown and Tom Gutierrez in the] 25 Expert class. Behind Schutz in the 500 Expert-Intermediate combined race, all was chaos as different riders fought for second place. Clifford Bean took second ahead of Glen Lund among the Experts but Mike Higashi was the night's surprise. Intermediate Higashi finished well all night, once riding an inspried race to stay in sight of Schutz. Higashi finished top 500 Intermediate for his efforts.
