MALCOLM SMITH &- GUNNAR NILLSON TAKE
BAJA 1000 WITH OUT-OF-THE-CRATE
400cc HUSQVARNA
-
A rugged, grueling course for one of the toughest races around has again met its match. Mal~lm Smith,
winner of this year's Baja 500, proves again why he's called "Master of Baja". Malcolm arrived at EI Arco,
the half-way point, to tum the bike over to partner Gunnar Nillson with a time 4 minutes faster than in
1970. Gunnar's riding duties took him through the dark, over terrain that became tougher and tougher, but
he still kept up the lead that Malcolm had established earlier in the day. Their 400cc Husky, pulled out of
the crate only days earlier, brought them in First Bike and 2nd Overall, being defeated only by a four-wheel
monster of over five times their size.
Another Husky entry in the 125cc.Cljlss took a Second, in spite of a split gas tank. Bruce Dunford and
Lars Eric Johansson deserve credit for a well ridden race, even with the added obstacle in their path to
victory.
