At that minute, the Senate Finance Committee defeated Assemblyman Z'berg's inJamous AB 3069. Those voting against the anti-ORV Bill were: Senator Clair W. Burgener representing San Diego County. Senator Walter W. Stiern representing Kern and Kings County. Senator Fred W. Marler Jr., representing Butte, Colusa, Glenn, Shasta, Solana, Sutter, Tehama, Yolo, and Yuba Counties. Senator Stephen P. Teale representing Alpine, Amador, Calaveras, El Dorado, Lassen, Modoc, Nevada, Placer, Plumas, Sierra, Stanislaus, and Tuolomne Counties. Instead of boring you with all of the details, let's just take a few seconds and wish these honest and deserving men a most rewarding career. They certainly deserve it for saving our sport for us. And let's also offer our thanks to all of those persons who responded to our appeals for letters in opposition to AB 3069. Hawk Flies But Can't Swim By Bruce Flanders The Honda Hawk, out to break the World Land Speed Record of 265 mph and surpass the 300 mph barrier, proved that it can fly but can't swim. After clocking through the traps at 285 miles last weekend, the Hawk again pushed over the salt at Bonneville, Utah late last week with 280 mpb in one direction but baled a piston in one engine to prevent a return run. Tbe crew repaired the problems Saturday and were prepared to make an all-out attempt at the record Sunday, but when the crew awoke in the morning, they found that nine of the dozen miles of the flats were under water from a heavy rain the night before. The Honda crew with Jon McKibbon the pilot, has left the flats and have stored the streamliner in local Windover, Utah, while waiting for the salt to dry up. Next week Cycle ews sbould have the complete record attempt report unless the Hawk returns for yet another try at Cal Rayborn's and Harley-Davidson's record. Photos by Ken Dunlap Cycle News East There was absolutely no way possible Bengt Aberg could keep his machine upright once he landed after going over that controversial jump just after the starting area at the St. Peters Trans-AMA last weekend. Aberg came down hard and fractured his collarbone. Right, Gunnar Lindstrom tries to give aid to the injured Swedish former World Champion. Southern California's version of the CMC Will, as of Jan. 1, 1972, require silencers at all its motocross events so CMC heads Kelvin Franks and Stu Peters got together with Hooker Headers recently to check out eh noise levels of various machines with and without silencers. Above, Rick Vesco of Hooker Headers takes a db reading under mock race conditions at Saddleback Park. Some neat readings came up, including a 250 Ya.maha which wailed at 107 dbs with an open chamber but quieted down to 94 dbs when fitted with a silenced Hooker. Other readings were comparable with drops of nearly 10 dbs per motorcycle tested. All this. a step in the right direction. ~I
