WILLIS TAKES
SACTO 250"
EXPERT CLASS
By Lisa Willls
SACRAMENTO, cai., Fri., Aug. 16 Well , r acing tans, here we are, back for
another night of good racing at sacramento National Raceway . And since they
always s tart with the s maller ones first,
so goes the 100Cc Novtce Maln.
Walton Burres was off the line In fr ont
with Bill Strange In second, pushing hard.
They rode In this or der for three laps,
then Strange took over the lead. Mean while, back in the pack Ronnie Blackman
was In third, and trying to get into second, but Burres was ' holding down the
runnerup spot, with no thought of letting
anyone else by. And they rode to the fin Ish in this order.
Good Novice Go's
Excitement flowed over everyone when
the 200Cc Novice Main started. For
these boys to be Just Novices, they put on
one of the best shows of riding for the
night . Off the line first was Larry Beaty,
followed by #13H, with Sparky Pinola
running third. Now here Is where the
show started: John Green came through
the pack rrom way back, to shoot Into
first place, getti ng there before anyone
knew he was even in the raeel He
stretched the lead way out , Ieavlng the
chances of anyone getti ng by very slim.
Still running second was Bates, but
Sparky went down. Now running third,
after coming up from fifth, was Milan
Vickers . There were still many mor e
changes , such as Vic ker s taking over
second, putting Beaty in third s pot.
Now for a puzz le, the 100cc-200cc
Amateur! Exper t Main Event. There are
three different classes - 200cc Exper t,
200cc Ama te urs and 100cc Ama teurs .
They still receive a trophy for winning
in their own clas s . It s tarted with Mer r ill
Beidleman (Exper t) followe d by Ralph
Gutierrez (Ama teur) on a Bultaco in
second . The n In third spot cam e Mike
Ell is (Expert) from the 25- yard handtcap line . On the third time around Ellis
r oared into second ahead of Gutierr ez.
Elli s didn't s low down, because he went
r ight on thr ough for the win, leaving
Beidl eman second.
Meanwhile the 100cc Amateurs were
having their r ace for fir s t spo t, in which
Pa t Rooney wor ked his way Into fourth
over all, and also Into fir s t place for
class trophy. This win for Rooney also
made him sure man for the high point
trophy, and he certainly deserves It.
Now cam e a little bigger bikes in the
250cc Novice Main. J umping out in fr ont
right off the lin e was Jeff Holman , fol-
Willis Takes 250cc Expert
Gary 'Willis , Harley-mounted fr om
sacramento, went down In his heat while
running ahead of the pack. Many other
riders went clown in the same corner because of track conditions, but not all the
r iders returned to the Maln, especially
to take first place, as .Wll li s dld , He had
to work his way through the field to take
over the lead, but after getting there on
the third lap he held It well to the finish.
George Carter wound up second and Ray
(Hole Shot) vatne, also on a Harley,
finished third. Though trying for second,
Ray not able to get by Carter.

lowed ' by sam Whitie. Then a quick
change and Don Coleman shot Into first
place. This put Holman second and
Whitie third, pushing 'hard for that runnerup spot. And after a short time
Whitie did Just that, took over second.
What little this guy lacks in horsepower
he makes up in skill.
The 250cc Amateur Main found Jerry
Pratt taking the lead right off the line,
only to have Jimmy Roder (half of ,the
father-son racing team ) come Into first
down the back chute, and Dick Lewis
followed, puttlng Pratt into third. Then
Lewis dropped back, Pratt moved again
Into second spot and began pushing hard
for the lead, finally getting by Roder for
first. Lewis also made his play for s econd and got by, relegating Roder back
into third, and that 's the way It ended.
